DNP in mental health

Published

Hi!

Anyone in here who has a DNP in mental health and would like to tell me a little bit about your experiences with the application process (what will strengthen an application). Thanks

Hi Fezz,

Although I have not started my first class, this year I submitted applications to a MSN program as well as a DNP program (both in Psychiatric/Mental Health NP track) and received offers from both. Do you have any questions related to specific parts of the application? I assume you have a specific program in mind?

I am looking to pursue BSN-DNP PMHNP. My BSN GPA was 3.05. That was several years ago and in no way represents the knowledge and skills that I have now! Any suggestions for me?

Hi RubyLex,

Your GPA isn't stellar, but it isn't terrible either! While graduate programs do look at GPA's and test scores, they are often looking at the candidate in a more holistic manner. They look at work experience, skills, and the reason for pursuing degree, amongst others. Essentially they want proof you can handle graduate level work. Do you have any specific programs in mind? I find programs vary so much from one to the next regarding admissions criteria, it's hard to get general advice on this topic.

Hi! I just wanted to let you know to continue to go for it regardless of your GPA. My BSN GPA was just over 3.2 I believe and I was accepted into the one and only PMHNP- DNP program that I applied to. I feel that they look at GPA sometimes, but I feel like relevant life and work experiences play a bigger role in their decision making process. My background: I worked in a pediatric office for a year and a half, worked on a step down medicine unit for a year in a half and now I currently work in a neuro ICU. So as you can see no psych experience. If you have the strive you can do it!
