I discovered a post on in a large, private nursing discussion group on a social media website.
The person posting works for the same organization that I do. I challenged that person and got REAMED for being a "rat". Am I wrong in thinking that I need to report a serious allegation made against the organization that I am a loyal employee? It was not just a vent or rant, there was an actionable allegation made.
I contacted the person's superior anonymously. Now I have to decide to take it further or not.
**not asking for legal advice. It has nothing to do with me or anywhere near where I work-it is a different entity entirely-but part of the bigger organization.
It's called integrity. When someone who is teaching new nurses throws the company who signs her paycheck under the bus, that, to me, is a lack of integrity. I am neither young nor naive.
because a company signs my paycheck does not mean they receive my unconditional loyalty.
this is an old thread, but you never did explain how you "knew" the nurses making claims against your company were libelous.

I have read this thread and found it entirely interesting but have a viewpoint quite different from everyone else. I find OP's loyalty to the organization the saddest thing of all. In over 30 plus years of nursing I have watched repeatedly hospital systems throw their nurses under the bus in legal cases, eliminate nurses claiming downsizing, and cannot tell you how many times I have seen nurses let go when it gets close to their retirement. I used to have extreme loyalty to the first hospital I worked for because my son had died there when I was younger and I wanted to go back and make a positive difference. Then as time passed and I gained experience I made the move and I got into management. I thought that I could make a difference for not only patients but the nurses who were so understaffed and often overlooked. OMG was I naive. I began to see how many times situations would come up and they would sacrifice the nurse, or nurses. I watched racial politics play out. I watched doctors issues covered up and documentation altered to change potential liability.
I had to leave and I have never looked back. It broke my heart but I sure got a dose of reality shock. Sadly I learned many other well known medical institutions are not that different the higher up you go. There are always medical politics and power struggles and hidden games being played.
It did not matter if it was a legal issue, if it was a "thinning of the herd" so to speak, or watching nurses who had over 20 plus years near retirement suddenly have their positions eliminated.....only for the position to be brought back later with a few words different but the exact same role. It sounds noble to have respect and believe in an organizations merits and ethics but I am sad to think the OP will learn one day that although she might believe in defending an organization when push comes to shove it will be her head they serve on the silver platter and not theirs. They will use a person as much as they will let them, just don't expect much in return when it comes down to the wire.
Just a few thoughts on a different aspect of the issue. Needless to say I don't like the games played in the upper administrative levels and take the lateral nursing positions that do not directly involve the hidden politics in the nursing departments.
