Discouraged and Overwhelmed LNA

Published

I really could use some advice. I am an LNA in a nursing home that currently has 39 residents. We have no housekeeper, I am always being told told to borrow items from one resident to use for another resident, wipes, depends, bath products, etc. I always write down what the resident needs so it will be ordered but it takes weeks to get even one thing. And a lot of nights I am the only LNA with the Med Passer. The nights that there are 2 of us Lna's, this one particular Lna will take the other med cart to help the med passer after the boss leaves for the night so I'm still the only Lna on the floor with all of these residents. The Lna is best friends with the med passer, whom is my supervisor. I want to say something so bad that I feel it is wrong, but I work a lot with these two and they're best friends and I don't want to end up getting them upset with me to the point that it will make it uncomfortable to work with them. I don't really want to go to the boss because they'll know it's me that said something. And I feel as if the boss doesn't really want to listen to problems.

Either you say something to the supervisor or start looking for another job in the meantime.:nurse:

May I ask what LNA stands for? Never heard such a term before.

LNA stands for Licensed Nurse Assistant

Wow. Sounds like you need a new job.

Is this other LNA certified to give meds? If not this is a BIG problem that could cause direct harm to a resident. Do you not even have a nurse in the building?

This place sounds dangerous. I would start scouting for a new job and consider informing your boss. Easier said than done, I know. But I don't go to work to make friends, so I don't care if people get upset at me- but that is just me :D.

I think what you are called as an "aide" and what your duties can be is controlled by each state's Board of Nursing. Just my :twocents::nurse:!!

Yes this person is certified to pass meds. She is not an LNA though, just a care giver. As far as us having a nurse on our shift... We don't have one. We have one RN and she works the day shift, we have no RN or LPN on our night shifts. They are supposedly on call..whenever we can reach them that is. We have 2 med runs on our shift..One at 4:00 and one at 7:00pm. She won't help the med passer at 4:00 because the office people are still there, but you can bet at 7:00 that she's passing meds with the other med passer to help her. We are scheduled to have 1 med passer and 2 Lna's per shift. Instead, we have 2 med passers and one LNA.

Just reading that makes me want to advise you to find a different place to work, all well and good people help each other out when it's quiet, but it's plain cruel to force you to do cares meant for two LNA's.

Have you spoke to her about it? It appears she doesn't think you mind that she's doing this?

Either way sending you my best wishes hey and hope it gets better there.

I want to thank you, and yes it does feel cruel and thoughtless, and selfish. I feel discouraged because I truly enjoy my residents and the the thought of leaving them makes me feel sad...like I would be abandoning them, and oo the other hand the place is run so very wrong.
