Hi every one,

i have a quick question, if you are trainind as a diabilites nurse, can you actively take a practice nurse job without adult branch nursing, or can you as a disbility nurse take a role as a Health Care Asssitant and adminster medication and other treatment.JUST BECAUSE YOU ARE REGISTERED.

I am confused, i speak reference a working colleague who has done just this,

Another friend of mine was a peads Nurse, he had to retrain via the OU to be able to adult nurse,

can someone put me correct on my understanding, in the nicest way please.

Best Wishes

i would have thought it would depend which part of the register you are on and whether that registration covers you for practising that role

The one to ask here is probably the nmc, someone on here may have the answer though

Thanks for your reply,

I wonder why the person took the HCA job and now wants to do it all

I am a practice nurse and you really need to be general adult trained as majority of work is over 18 although I do see children but mainly for dressings or childhood immunisations.

If HCA I would like to know what policies are in place to administer medications.... also depends at what HCA level they are trained to

Well as i mentioned she is disabilites nurse, but, it becomes complex because she is a disability nurse she feels as a HCA she can appoint her self to her registered nurse position, this can not be so.

I feel she then makes the other HCA's feel as they have no worth, as she is far more qualified, their are certain things a HCA is not permitted to do within the PCT.

It is the job titile which counts to what you can not do, surly not the registration, how can you monitor the job for other HCA's if one is allowed to do more. Why apply for a HCA role if qualified????

I am trying to fight my corner at work, and do not seem to be able to put my point across well.

are you her manager? or if not is there a manager you can speak to about this?

that is a good point, HCA will not get paid the same as RN and also if anything should happen and she works outside her job role she will be in a lot of trouble plus questions would be asked on what the surgery was doing to let her do what she is doing and if I was her manager I would be making sure she only did what a HCA can do and not tempt her to do what she shouldn't be doing.

No i am not her Manager, i am a student nurse doing the open uni program i am a third year, but my primary role is a HCA,

I am not allowed to step outside of my HCA role when at my home base working, i can only student nurse whilst i am in my year of practice training, so why can she step in like this.

It is as if she has two roles, doing a hca job for little money but actually because she is qualified as a disibilty nurse they allow her to practice,

I am very confused.

I was on the understanding that you had to complete adult nursing branch to be a practice nurse, my friend qualified as a peads nurse and he had to retrain for 3 years to nurse adults? this is why i asked the question/

Sorry if a am confusing you all :o)))

At the end of the day she is employed as a HCA and should only do the work required for that position, if she is doing work outside her scope she is putting her license at risk and can be struck off if anything should go wrong, also her line manager will also come under fire as they are accountable for her work and lastly her practice will come under fire for letting her work outside her scope. Yes she is qualified but not in the required category she is employed in and therefore is putting a lot of people at risk especially the patients. She must be aware of accountability as it is part of the NMC

Thank you, for your reply, when i go in today i will try and address it the best way i can with some of your ideas.

It is a little hard for me at times as being the stuDent and the HCA often leads people to feel i am not qualified to make judgements.

Thanks again and i will let you know what happens

hi

having been a practice nurse lead, I would have been horrified to find someone not on the adult register working as a practice nurse.

if she is working as a hca then there are strict limits within which she should be working.. and the PCT probably have strong ideas about that!

the problem is a GP can employ anyone to do anything and can call them what he likes... but potentially she could run into big problems (working outside her area of comptence) and could find herself up in front of the NMC.. with a loss of number.

you need to be very careful to stay within your code of conduct..

you are in a difficult situation but maybe a quiet word in the lead practice nurses ear might help. its how I heard about things and I dont reveal my sources!!
