Direct Entry Programs- How hard to get in?

Published

Thanks for all of your responses to all of my previous posts. As you probably assume, I'm evaluating all of my options including ADN, BSN, and Direct-Entry MSN. The direct entry programs look extremely appealing, but seeing that they are at the best of colleges, I don't know how easy they are to get in.

Does anyone know what the typical GPA, scores, acceptance rates of these programs are? Anyone have any experience applying?

I'm in MD, so I'd consider Hopkins, but Columbia, MGHI in Mass, Case Western, Vanderbilt, Pace, and Yale also look appealing.

Seeing as nursing traditionally isn't an "ivy league" profession, are the credentials required for these programs less than what a typical "ivy" student would need?

I'd love to hear experiences with any programs.........

I'm sure they are not laughing at your application, unless you put some humor in your essay! :chuckle Just as we vicariously supported the MGH/BC/Regis students, we are here to support you and Gen! :D

Ach, I'm getting more nervous just posting about it. I applied for midwifery. It's the #3 ranked mw program in the nation. I would absolutely love to do this program.

I am already holding my breath when I check my mail. I'm hoping it will be sooner rather than later. I am in upstate NY though so who knows how long it will take to get here :)

I went to an info session back in November. I found the school to be super friendly and helpful. I really liked the atmosphere.

If I don't get in there I am planning to apply to an Accelerated BSN program and try my luck again in a few years. The cost of UIC is a little high for an out of stater but I think worth it in the end.

Just wanted to edit to say I did put a little humor in my essay. I'll try to do some positive imagery and imagine them laughing at that instead of my GPA:chuckle thanks for the Support.

Definitely post if you hear anything and good luck:) Maybe we'll be classmates soon!

Hello fellow hopeful CEG!!

Glad to find anoher UIC person here! I guess now its round two on the forum for us folks.

Did you go to an infosession? I was really surprised to hear how the first group only had three weeks to get all their paperwork in and approved for acceptance. Wow!

So, I am sure that this is highly competitive. I definately did not know that our school is number 8!!

I don't know how my stats will measure up either or what they are looking more closely at for consideration. I hope we both find out in a good way!

I did read that we should know about call backs for interviews by around April 1st, (modified from the original mid-March).

April 1st is two weeks away but a Friday so, who knows. I promise that I will share here if I find out anything at all. Just like the eastern crew did, (Jess, Jen and all)

I am not directly in Chicago but, mail from there gets here as if I were.

Which specialty did you choose? I chose the Adult NP track but, on the form it looked like Med/Surg/acute/adult/geriatric...? So, that is the one I chose.

:)

Thank you guys!!

CEG,

When I got the email anouncing receipt of my complete application is stated that is was now being reviewed by the department and that candidates selected for interview would be notified AFTER April first. So, we have to wait. Sigh, again.

The infosession I went to was Jan 19th and they announced that the application deadline was pushed up to March 1st, (final now not early) and that they were receiving more applications than they intended.

They also announced that if we chose one of the regional sites, (for Illinois university that means Ubana, Rockford, Peoria and Morris, IL) then we would greatly increase our odds of acceptance because at Chicago there were currently only twenty slots open for the GEP, (yet all sites would use Chicago for the first 15 months pre-NCLeX portion.)

I truly considered relocating myself and my husband was willing also but, at the last minute decided to keep my site as Chicago.

My numbers are not great either, (good call to include humor!) so I am very anxious to find out how they weigh our packets.

Glad that we are both here to share with the east coast crew, (I mean they are a triplet full of triple acceptances!!!)

p.s. when I later emailed the coordinator to ask how many applications they did receive, (around March 5th or so~) she responded to say that they still had no idea, (that many, yikes!!)

CEG,

I attended UIC for one of my undergraduate years and did like the atmosphere, also I did my sociology/criminal justice internship at Juvenile court which is located directly next to the VA hospital and UIC hospital and heard so many good things.

Another big factor for me to go there is that UIC has a Native American Student Support program that I was a member of for my year there and they are greatly encouraging. Even though I am a mixed-cultured, urban born Anishinaabe, (Chippewa) it really makes a difference to me to have the NASP. One meeting we had one of the Nurse counselors (a Native American lady) come in and she asked why was I majoring in Teaching of Spanish, (my associates is biology) she was very encouraging about the College of Nursing.

I do feel that the University of Illinois in Chicago, (the circle campus) is really a good fit for me.

Originally I was applying to their Jane Addams school of social work until I found the GEP. That is where I belong!!

Now, back to the wait.

Unless something pretty dramatic happens in the next week (like MGH calling me to let me know I have a full scholarship! ) I'm 95% sure I'm going to BC.
