Direct Entry Programs- How hard to get in?

Published

Thanks for all of your responses to all of my previous posts. As you probably assume, I'm evaluating all of my options including ADN, BSN, and Direct-Entry MSN. The direct entry programs look extremely appealing, but seeing that they are at the best of colleges, I don't know how easy they are to get in.

Does anyone know what the typical GPA, scores, acceptance rates of these programs are? Anyone have any experience applying?

I'm in MD, so I'd consider Hopkins, but Columbia, MGHI in Mass, Case Western, Vanderbilt, Pace, and Yale also look appealing.

Seeing as nursing traditionally isn't an "ivy league" profession, are the credentials required for these programs less than what a typical "ivy" student would need?

I'd love to hear experiences with any programs.........

OK, I just popped home to check the mail. There was a letter from UCSF! But it was a No, so it looks like I start working on other plans for the next year and apply again in the fall. *shrug*

I reckon I'll start this evening off with a :beercuphe

ChrisA,

First-->AAAaaagh!

Second-->Time to write that letter asking them to reconsider, right?

Then lastly, as you said you get another year to work on the supportive classes or pre-reqs or experience and anything else that will be on hold when classes for the program do start.

I hope it works out!! DArn, grumble, mumble, moan.....

ChrisA,

My condolences regarding the "No" from UCSF. Whatever it takes to kick back and take it easy, go for it.

It's so darn hard to get into these programs!

I mean we're all intelligent, accomplished, talented people who I imagine feel a calling of sorts to be nurses/clinical nurse specialists/nurse practitioners/nurse midwives, etc.

Go figure...

Hi,

I think it has something to do with the shortage of teaching faculty. The ADN programs that I had been looking at for years, (but not taking the deadlines and total completion of pre-reqs seriously) are nearly as equally as competitive.

Hi,

I came across another thread in this forum that may be of interest:

p.s. I asked and found out that the NHSC will not pay the nurse practitioner as a bridge program (we aren't nurses yet) but, we would qualify under the regular nurse scholariships, also, it looks like the loan repayment option could be good once we complete our degrees, (I know, I know,,,,when we get there)

That is excellent and really says a lot about the program that they are willing to give specific feedback to applicants. It's amazing more schools won't do this- when it would only strengthen the quality of their applicant pool!

I agree Jess. And it shows respect for all the people who went to such a great effort to apply and interview. It would be cruel to just cut people loose.

I took your and everyone else's advice here, when I received my notice that I was #1 alternate for the Gerontological NP track, and I wrote a letter to the Dean asking for reconsideration.

I just got a call yesterday from someone in the program and she told me that although the Dean would talk to people who weren't accepted this year, he wouldn't talk to the alternates, because the alternates would have gotten in if there were space

I didn't ask or expect to speak with the Dean, I just restated my eagerness and preparedness for the program and provided my current math grades, since my math GRE was low. So it was really kind for someone to call me. The woman I spoke with told me to hang in there, don't give up, and that my chances are still really good. 7 people typically decline each year. Her encouragement has made me cautiously hopeful again . . .

What an emotional rollercoaster :uhoh21: I'm anxiously waiting to hear about you guys too! This is such a great, deserving group of people.

Still nothing from BC in the mail today. :( I'm beginning to think they must be going in batches- maybe alphabetically? My friend got his letter on Wed- it was postmarked on tues and his last name begins with "C". Mine is "S" and I can be pretty safely asured it hasn't been mailed yet or I would have received it today. So, next week ....hopefully!

Geez- this is just getting annoying! :p

Sunday will be the day of rest as we know nothing will come!

I think you said your friend got denied- so maybe the accepts come after the denies? did he hear from any other place?

All i heard from people in my lab the other night was that one student had an interview at Northeastern and one had an interview at Regis.

PDxDreamer,

I'm sorry about your "No." Bummer!

As others have said, I hope there's better news on the way.

I'm glad you have us. And I'm glad we have you, so we get to go through the lows together, before the highs, and if not the high's, the plan B's, which I hope we'll stick around for before quitting this thread (I plan to).

I hope you do lots of self-nurturing this weekend. Swedish massage? That's what I think of, for you it may be something different.

Oh I hope that I'm accepted and that's why it's taking so long!!! I only applied to BC, MGH and Regis. MGH said they would send out letters next week. My application isn't complete at Regis yet (waiting on my A&P prof's rec) so they said I could expect to hear from them a week or two after it is complete.

I thought interviews at Northeastern were over? My friend who got negged from BC interviewed at Northeastern like a month ago and said that they had two weekends of interviews and he thought that was it. But they dont send out letters till April- that's a looong way off!

Thanks, Gen, for trying to come up with some rhyme and/or reason for this. Unfortunately, the ADN programs around here are almost as difficult to get into, although I will be applying as a backup plan this fall for next year to two of them. Hundreds of applicants, only 50 or so spaces. People on waiting lists for years.

The bright side of an ADN program is that if I end up going to it, most of the clinical MSN programs accept RN's with Bachelors in different degree, and I'd have the RN experience already. And there'd be less time in school, and less money to pay and perhaps if I'm working, some tuition reimbursement. That's why an ADN program is one part of my Plan B, along with applying to a couple of ABSN programs and a whole slew of direct entry MSN progams next yr if MGH doesn't pan out this yr (or Vanderbilt, which looks like it hasn't).
