just moving the other thread to its new home. Here's where we talk about issues unique to Master's-entry programs!
Duuuuuuuude you guys. Summer was nothing compared to this. MedSurg, pathophys, stupid research methods class...Just need to vent. AAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!! I know I can do this well enough to make the grades and pass the tests, but what if I KILL someone because I forget something??? I - I - I - this is a lot of material, is what I'm saying.Whew, okay, better.
Cheranaustin, I think University of Virginia has a program. I think it snows there, though.
Elizabells,
Oh, my....you're frigthening me One of my requirements for my program is one that doesn't make you take 18 or more hours a semester!
Hang in there! I wish you the best!!!!
I have attached AACN's Accelerated Bachelor's & Master's list link. Hope this helps the other NEWBIE's.

This list might be missing a few schools.
I can't wait to apply for Virginia. I am finding that the more expensive schools have the higher cost of living and decent pay but the less expensive schools don't have as good pay (for the husband: IT guy). As soon as I find something like this, I'll post it.

I've had a little drama with my childcare situation this week, and after meeting with faculty this week and the dean on Thurs, I've "decelerated" myself within my program. Basically, I've dropped Nursing Science and Clinical. I'll take Patho and Pharm this semester (6 credits total, rather than 16 with NS and clinical) and in the spring I'll take Advanced Pharm and something else tba. I will join the cohort starting in fall 06 for clinicals.
I'm shocked, amazed, and totally grateful that they are letting me "decelerate" the accelerated first year- I thought I was going to need to drop out. I lost my grant money because I'm no longer full time, but I'm fine with that. I feel such a sense of peace, my kids are less traumatized by my schedule and I feel like I have enough energy and patience for both school and my family.
Hope everyone is doing well in their programs. I know the hours and readings are insane for everyone- but try to post and let us know how you all are doing! I would love to hear from you all currently in your programs or planning to apply for fall '06!

Hi Jess,
Thanks for letting us know about your situation. I know that must have been a difficult decision for you to make. I think once most schools accept you, they are willing to work with you; they want to keep you in the program. They also have their stats to keep - how many people graduate and pass the NCLEX - so they also have a vested interest.
I think it's fine to "deccelerate"; there are people at Hopkins who did that after the summer semester, so they can be with the traditional class. It may take you a little longer, but right now, peace of mind and balance in your personal life is imost important. Thanks for sharing.

Jess, I'm sorry to hear about your troubles, but it's so good that your program was accommodating! I've heard stuff from people in CC programs that really leads me to believe that we (at more expensive uni's) are treated a lot better bc of the money we're putting in. Not sure how I feel about that on a political level, but I'm really glad things worked out for you! I guess the nanny sitch couldn't be resolved?
By the way, did you notice someone else changed her user name to something VERY similar to yours? I got a little confused at first!

Thanks smile and elizabells! I really agree- I think had I been at a cc, with all the waitlists and such, I would have been out of luck and they would have the next person on the waitlist registering for classes before I even left the campus! My Dean was soooo nice and accommodating, and she really didn't have to be. I do think they want to keep the attrition rate as low as possible though-- so that could be a factor too.
The nanny situation really came to a head this week. She is a nice girl- and a fine babysitter for short stretches (3-4 hrs) but she's just not a professional nanny. I scrambled around this week and came up with some backups if neccessary, but I am only in class 6 hrs over three days a week- so even with reading/studying time it is nowhere near where I was in terms of childcare use with a full schedule (45+hrs). The really nice thing too is that my schedule now exactly matches my daughter's morning preschool, so I drop her off, go to my class, and I'm back in time to pick her up at noon. My younger daughter is at home with the babysitter during that time- but she takes a long morning nap- so she likely won't even really notice my absence!
Funny you mention that other member with a similar name- I was reading a thread the other day and I did a doubletake because I saw what I thought was my screen name replying to the post that I had opened for the first time just then. I thought I was really losing it! I will keep a lookout for the "other" jess and introduce myself! :)

Hi guys,
I guess I'm the unofficial spokesperson for the MGH IHP program, since I don't see anyone else posting from my class. We had orientation for 2 days and basically we're going full throttle now. Classes are busy and fast paced, and we have lots of readings to do already. My first test is Sept 28!! and we have to perform a BP test to prove our capability within the next week. Kind of nervewracking, but fun and everyone's nice. Some people do get scholarships, but I don't know about grants. I took out loans so I'm not the best person to ask. My class is basically doing everything the other schools in Boston are doing - basic nursing skills (bed baths, bed pans, BP, etc). We have two clinical placements - psychiatric, which we started a week ago, and surgical, which begins in Oct. In these programs, you hit the ground running, so anyone who's applying, be ready to take on a full courseload and clear your calendar! Best of luck to all of you out there in school or applying. TGIF!!

Thanks for the MGH info... i'm glad you are enjoying it! That's one of the places I'm applying to.
The past two weeks I:
1. told my current research advisor (ie, boss) of my plans. he wasn't exactly thrilled, but not unsupportive either
2. told my former (undergraduate) research advisor. he's dissapointed, but will write me a "very strong" rec.
eeek! this transition is starting to feel more and more real. and scary. what am i doing???!!

...School is crazy already. The readings are insane! like hundreds of pages each night. Ugh. We had labs and learned bed baths and bedmaking. I love my Patho class so far and I have Pharm/Nutrition tomorrow which I think I'll like as well. We go to the hospital in Oct! Man, I can't believe I'm in nursing school! Gen, NP to Be, and others- have your classes started yet? How is it going?

Hi Jess,
Took me a while to come here for a visit. School is okay so far, I really like it. It is a lot of reading though! I am waaay behind on that but, am trying to at least keep up with brief reviews of the material.
So far my hubby and I have tried too much to keep seeing each other during this first month but, finally are settling in.
He would come here, I would go there and well then we would call each morning, noon and night!
He did move me in and get the place set up for me and we managed to work things our very nicely and are continueing to work on them. About 10 days before school started I got a call from a student needing to sublet his apartment. This apartment is right in between two of our clinical sites and just down the road from a third. I walk to school in the morning and it takes less than 10 minutes. I feel very lucky.
Okay, now, school information. My class or track is 24 students and I think it is a very cooperative and supportive group. What a nice surprise!
We have quizzes in one class every week, and next week we have our first exam, (of two) in another class. We will have a mid-terms coming up already in two weeks.
We have pharmacology/pathophysiology and physical assesment and fundamentals of nursing. This is three classes and its 18 credit hours.
This is very fast! I think that I am in denial for how much studying I need to put myself on 'lock' down for. :)

p.s. I am in denial about how much work I should be doing but, I do not want to blow this at all

Hello again Jess,
I am very happy for you that things turned out well in the end! Sigh of relief.

The Rockhurst / Research College of Nursing program is an Accelerated BSN, not an entry level MSN / NP.
