Direct Entry MSN 2020 at Columbia University

Updated:   Published

Hello Everyone, The applications for June 2020 at Columbia University has now opened. I haven't seen any new threads for this year so I wanted to start one. I am in the process of applying and half way done! References already sent their recommendations!! and an upside to this year is that Columbia University is no longer requiring the GRE. SO I am pretty happy about that!!

Good Luck!

Did anyone from the waitlist ever hear back or did they just not take anyone from the waitlist this year?

Hi everyone! I am looking at the MDE Program at Columbia and would love to hear what advice you all have!

The current cohort just started the program this week. However, I can try to offer you some advice if though I am still in the first week of class. What would you like to know?

Thank you so much! And congratulations on starting the program!

I am super nervous about applying for the program - so any advice related to that process!

And why did you choose Columbia over other programs - and what other schools would you recommend applying to!

I’m actually so mad cause I’m not sure if anyone else got it- but I received an email like a month ago (a week after they said they’re was no movement on the waitlist) stating that they were going to “review enrollment status and get back to us”. And they never did. Like I understand being on the waitlist, but that’s just giving people false hope and that’s not cool at all.

Hey I am interested in applying to Columbia MDE! I was wondering if anyone was familiar with their OPEN program (aside from what they tell you on their website)? Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Hi which prerequisites were you inquiring about specifically? I ask this question because Columbia is pretty fair on what they accept.

Hi. I believe the OPEN program is for A&P I and II as well as nutrition. Application deadline for the fall is coming up and it’s a 10 week online course. If the OPEN program doesn’t work out for you, look into Portage Learning, I took my science prerequisites with Portage.

What did you think of Portage? I am considering that as well since I work full-time, so anything at a set time would be hard to work around. Portage is nice because you can do it at your own pace.

Hi I am interested in taking A&P 1 and 2.

Hi,

OPEN is a program that is starting this year for people who are missing some of the prerequisites to get into Post-baccalaureate accelerated nursing programs (like Columbia's MDE Program). I am currently in the MDE. Since OPEN is a new thing at Columbia, there won't be anyone that can give you advice on how the classes actually are. The professor who is in charge of the OPEN program, teaches a few classes for MDE and they are really thorough and fair.

I took AP I, II and micro, those 3 classes were fine, no real complaints. There are module (chapter) tests as well as lab test. For the labs, you have to watch a video, take notes and take a test based on the video. The good thing is that you can use your notes for lab tests. I am currently taking Chemistry, not a Columbia requirement, but other nursing programs require it and this class has been a nightmare. Portage now requires you to download a program called lockdown browser and they require you to turn on your camera during exams. It’s an annoying process because there are glitches with the program and overall, I just think it’s annoying to be recorded while you’re taking a test.

I don't have anything to add re: this OPEN thing (first time I'm hearing about it and I'm my first semester of the Columbia MDE program). I'm curious if it's premium-priced like regular Columbia tuition? If cost is a factor, I'll chime in that I took all of my prerequisites at community college and have felt more than well prepared so far in my courses, which has been a huge relief!
