Direct Entry MSN 2020 at Columbia University

Updated:   Published

Hello Everyone, The applications for June 2020 at Columbia University has now opened. I haven't seen any new threads for this year so I wanted to start one. I am in the process of applying and half way done! References already sent their recommendations!! and an upside to this year is that Columbia University is no longer requiring the GRE. SO I am pretty happy about that!!

Good Luck!

So update - I got into one of my top choice schools in SoCal so I will not be joining you all at Columbia. Good luck to everyone, and hopefully someone on the waitlist will get lucky

If you don’t mind me asking, where are you going? ? And congrats! So happy for you!

University of San Diego's MEPN program. I'm also #7 on UCLA's waitlist so I'm gonna see if I get off it, and then compare programs.

USD has access to great hospitals, just like Columbia. They have a brand new nursing simulation center as well. It's only three hours from my partner in LA, and class is 3x a week so I can maintain a long distance relationship much more easily.

Did anyone else submit a deposit elsewhere before deciding on committing to Columbia? What is the etiquette for letting the other school know you're not coming anymore? Is email okay? Or should I call them?

I attended visiting day on Friday, and I have some thoughts that perhaps some people here might empathize with.

A little background on me - I currently live in LA, 28 years old, and have a significant other. Columbia was the only program I applied to outside of SoCal, and I mainly did so because of the prestige and ability to experience NYC. As of now, it's the only program I've gotten into (waitlisted at one school and I am hopefully going to get off, two upcoming interviews and one pending decision). However, I made the choice that I needed to really love Columbia's program if I was seriously going to upend my life and move across the country, especially since my partner wouldn't be able to come and I would have to do long distance for a while. It also helped that they gave me a fair amount of Scholarship $$, and an invitation for their inaugural honors program.

I have to say, I was seriously underwhelmed by the events of the day. It seemed like the presenters were focused on trying to recruit us for the dual degrees, and didn't really talk much about what makes their program so different and special. They put a lot of weight on the value of an ivy-nursing education, and that seemed like their main selling point. But other than that, nothing really stood out that got me excited about going to Columbia specifically.

I appreciated the tour of the building, and talking to the students. But I honestly didn't love it. That being said, if it ends up being the only school I get into (since California admissions is really competitive), I would take it.

Did anybody else feel like this?

This is exactly how I felt last year when I visited the school on Visiting Day! They don’t seem organized (perhaps due to the fact that they changed to a new dean). The faculties coming and going made it seem like it was a business promotion event to get your money. I went to Hopkins instead and I’m still glad that I trusted my gut and didn’t choose Columbia. If you go to Hopkins’ visiting day and make the comparison, you will probably realize the difference.

I did, and I emailed them on Thursday with a nice thank you and letting them know about my decision to stay in the New York area. they responded back pretty quickly and were very nice about it! They didn’t ask which school I was attending instead and I didn’t specify other than “remaining in New York.” If they hadn’t emailed me right back within about 24 hours, I would have followed up with a phone call, just to make sure they had the info so someone else can take my spot.

I had a question since I am still waiting on another school to respond. If we put down the deposit but decide to go to another school, the entire $500 is non-refundable, right?

Yup. You will lose the $500. I paid the deposit and I’m kind of unhappy about it but I’d rather save my seat and lose $500 than lose my seat completely just in case other plans don’t pan out. Did you already pay Columbia’s deposit? Because I believe the deposit deadline is in 5 minutes.

It’s due at 3pm Eastern time, no?

Is it 3pm or 12pm? I’m also on West Coast time so that’s probably what’s messing me up, haha! Disregard!

I wasn’t there on Newly Admitted Students Day. Does anyone know the full price of the program? I just know the first year is $132K.

and when would we hear back about housing?
