Dillemma of sorts...

Published

Hi,

I am a second degree change of career student. I'm currently at Medgar Evers and I just finished taking my pre-reqs for some BSN programs I'm thinking about applying to. My dilemma is my gpa from my first degree. I was 19 and didn't take college seriously at all, and I had a rough time in college. I just couldn't get it together . Now I'm 35, married and a mom and I decided that Nursing is what I really want to do. Right now I decided that all though my pre-reqs are done, I need to take some time and work on bringing my cumulative gpa up. So far my grades are A&P 1 B-, A&P 2 B+, Chemistry B+, and Micro B, I had to take intro to psyc over and I got a B-. I want to get my gpa up past a 3.5 so that when I do apply, the powers that be will see that the 35 me is worlds away from the 19 yr old me. Question is...will my past still haunt me?

Your situation comes up often as clockwork in one form or another on these boards. You can do a search of archived posts for general answers but honestly there isn't a single true answer.

Each nursing program and or the college/university they are part of has their own criteria for dealing with previous post secondary college work. Some exclude courses taken over "X" amount of years ago, others only apply that requirement to sciences and math. Then there are those that mainly care about pre-nursing sequence grades and NLN,SAT or TEAS exam scores.

Best way to approach the situation is to start looking at nursing programs you wish to attend and what their requirements are for admission. Keep in mind many nursing programs including CUNY ADN and BSN schools are now looking for a minimum of 3.0 in all science courses as a "passing" grade to get in and stay. In addition some major NYC hospitals are looking for the same when they select new graduates for hire.

Thank you for your response. I will search other posts.
