diff b/t johns hopkins hospital and johns hopkins bayview & ummc

I can't speak specifically to cardiac ICU--but I can give you general differences between Downtown Hopkins and Bayview. Bayview RN's are paid hourly, for the most part, we work either days or nights, the night shift nurses almost NEVER work a day shift, and the day shift nurses very rarely work a night shift but it does happen. Unit policy dictates weekends, holidays, etc. Downtown Hopkins nurses are paid salary, and are almost all rotating. They are also Magnet, so their nurses have a clinical ladder and things are very organized. You can be hired as either a 72 hour or an 80 hour contract, and that dictates your biweekly hours. Both hospitals utilize self scheduling and computerized based charting.

At Bayview, holidays are paid at 150% of your base pay (you also get 8 hours of Holiday pay, that you can use at your leisure like vacation time), and there is also overtime, which is 150% of your base pay for anything over 40 hours per week. There is also work bonus, which is a straight hourly wage, and usually doesn't pay more unless you have been there for a long time, or you are weekend option. Recently, there hasn't been a lot of overtime opportunities at Bayview, they have been cancelling people to let straight time float people work instead. I'm not 100% sure how the holiday and overtime works at Downtown Hopkins works, I know that they have a very generous float pool, and utilize Intrastaff frequently, so I don't think that their employees have the opportunity for overtime very often. In that case, I believe that they build comp time. I've been at Bayview for almost 5 years, and like everywhere, it comes with good things and bad things. I will say that many of the things that I don't love about it are probably specific to the unit that I work on, and not to the hospital itself. It's much smaller than downtown Hopkins and depending on where you are coming from, that could be adventageous when coming to a new area. University of MD and Downtown Hopkins are on the same level in size and structure, Bayview is a step below and then community hospitals below them, if that makes sense. Hope all of this helps.

JH main campus uses the PACE system for most positions so the overtime for holidays and your regular pay are all averaged in so your salary will be the same every pay period. You are required to work a certain number of holidays. There are 2 cardiac ICUs at the main campus. One is medical and one is surgical.

You can do rotating shifts or some units will let you do straight nights and you do get a differential for that.

UMMC pays more unless things have changed. When I interviewed at JHHC, I asked why the pay was so much lower and they said "it's an honor for you to work here" I thought *** and moved to UMMS. Having said that, I like the Hopkins facility better; bayview least of all tho for many reasons (I worked at 15 area hospitals for my job). Just my opinion!

I'm not sure when you interviewed but that wasn't my experience. Their pay is in the top 10% for the state. No one ever said "its just an honor for you to work here!" That sounds pretty pretentious to me. I've been to many different units at Hopkins and I'm still looking for this alleged snootiness I hear about every so often. Every facility is going to have some ugly acting people but I certainly don't see a disproportionate amount of people like that at Hopkins.

Maybe just one person doing all this damage? It's not the norm from the regulars, I will admit. I haven't had a tude from regular staff...ever there. Residents are cool, too. The ICU's are kinda weird but I imagine you warm up to them. I'm used to a different setup. Having said that, both facilities have great success.

I'm still hearing UMMS pays more BUT if JHHC gives 10 grand for education, they have my vote (someone needs to confirm that). UMMS gives a whopping 5 grand which steeeenks!

I'll confirm it! I'm a JHH employee and as long as you're making under $30,000 a year, you're eligible for $10,000 per academic year. I basically submit my tuition forms 4-weeks before the start of the semester (or earlier to be sure tuition to paid in time) and once the semester is over, I'm responsible for turning in that particular semester's grades. If grades are not submitted from the previous semester, a new semester will not be paid for. I'm considered as receiving "Tuition Advancement"; they'll pay the tuition (and I'm responsible for fees and textbooks). They also have Tuition Reimbursement for those earning over $30,000 a year as well.

Of course you're also signing up for service payback to the hospital once your educational goals are completed. But that's okay, I always had a goal of working at Hopkins as a nurse so it works out perfectly.

In my past life I worked for many years downtown after working at UMMS (and I did get more $$ at JHH). The JHH of 25 years ago paid differently but not the JHH of today but the nonsense continues of people saying that. I have had the pleasure of workign with many nurses who moved from the NYC area and they all felt that they were paid well compared to their NY union wages. True JHH kinda gets you on holidays, they say you get more in some strange formula but you do get overtime so how is that salary ? ? Its kinda funny to be called salaried when you get an hourly pay. I think that there is a world of difference between jhh and jhbmc iwth jhbmc being hopkins lite or as they like to say the kinder gentler hopkins.

Clearly my vote for you would be for JHH, they are on the verge of moving into a state of the art 1.5 billion dollar addition..yes i said billion $$$ . There is no place like it....
