Didn't pass the NCLEX RN due to anxiety

Published

Hi all,

I am a new grad RN student from Kaplan. I did the Kaplan review and my average for the qBanks was 67%.

I graduated June, and took the NCLEX end of July.

I just wanted to know if anyone out there has ever failed the NCLEX RN because of nerves...The content on the NCLEX was very similar to that of Kaplan review, but I kept changing my answers because I felt like I had to get out of the testing center and my heart was pounding.

My final result was a FAIL with 265 questions with "near passing" on all categories.

Please help! I am planning to schedule my retake in September 2014.

Hi chessknight

I know that you cannot fail the test by running out of time. I was just trying to say that the computer kept giving me questions until my time was over because it could not determine if was passing or failing. Yes, they do look at the last 6O questsions but if there is only one of those 60 questions "below passing" you are done. So running out of time is really not a good thing to happen to you. On the other hand, when you finish the 265 questions you have a 50/50 chance of passing. Thank you for your advice! Have you done the test yet?

Did you get your CPR result in the mail ? Because I took mine towards the end of July and haven't received it yet.

Hi chessknight

Yep you are right, it's definitely a lot harder to pass if you don't finish the test. I just took the test and had all 265 questions, it was awful...lol. Hopefully I passed, now I have to wait 48 hours to find out!

Anxiety and nerves is something I also struggle with. My test is a few weeks away and the very thought of it and the dreaded SATA questions gives me heart palpitations. I pray that on exam day I will be much calmer.

I think the more questions you do the more confident you'll become. Study until you feel like you can't learn/do anything more.

I literally just logged on here to address this same concern. I too failed with 265 questions, I was "near passing" or "above passing" standard in ALL categories. I know I can do this if I can just keep my anxiety at bay!!! I test in 13 days and I am already panic stricken :( ....I honestly dont know what to do to calm myself down!

Does ANYONE have any advice? What did you do to calm yourself?

Take ke a deep breath. Bring some snacks and water. And TAKE YOUR TIME! I know I can do this and so can you. Don't repeat what I did. Just focus on the exam. You'll do great!

I agree with a previous poster that the best thing you can do is break the habit of changing answers. It seems you know that you failed because you changed the answers so just learn to break that habit! I took my test early July and passed, surprisingly no real anxiety during the test, just a couple weeks before and as soon as the test shut off. Obviously my situation is a bit different, but I too have changed many answers from right to wrong. During the test I read the question and answer carefully once, picked my answer in my head but didn't put anything down yet and then reread once more to make sure and then officially marked an answer and moved on. This gave me a chance to think about my answer without having that "permanent" mark there telling me to question myself further. I also never ended up doing this but thought it might be helpful...when you read the question, use the white board they give you to write down any word specific indicators (ex: always, never, needs further information, etc.) as well as necessary specifics (ex: age, time, etc.) I think sometimes people miss the specifics within the question that help them to answer the question and then end up changing their answer 20 times because of that. Be cautious, but not too cautious. Continue to study and not question yourself too much. Good luck!

Hey guys! I took my NCLEX RN exactly 1 month and 30 days later and I passed the 2nd time around. I studied using Saunders Q&A and did the online questions. I studied after about 2 weeks of feeling depressed after failing. I took some yoga classes and started meditating. This totally helped! Now I'm an RN!
