Didn't disclose

Published

I was just recently accepted in to nursing school. On my application it asked if I had been convicted of a crime. I checked off 'no'. My background check has something on it and I am meeting with the faculty Monday. Do you think I am kicked out? I honestly thought my record was clean.

Why is your subject title "Didn't disclose?"

If you haven't committed a crime, maybe it's an error? I don't understand how you wouldn't know what is on your criminal record. Is there a "case search" online for your state? You could look there and see what's listed.

My daughter had missed too much school 10 years ago. I took parenting classes and checked in with the judge until the classes were over. I had no idea it would be on my record.

If that is the case, you really shouldn't have a problem explaining it to your school.

I know that with my school (not sure if all are like that), but they said if there is anything on your record, talk to them. They preferred students saying something before their background check came back mostly for time constraints so they could get things sorted. Just because something came back on someones background check, it didn't mean they were out of the program. They reviewed it case by case basis regarding the seriousness of it. They pretty much had to check to see if it would prevent you from going to clinical (based on their polices regarding records) or getting your license as it'd be pointless to pay money and complete any portion or all of the program if you couldn't meet all requirements.

So something on the record didn't mean out of the program. They talked to students and went from there depending on what the issue was.

It sounds like yours is something that can be explained. Obviously it'll depend on your school's policy, the clinical site's policy, and your states BON. Hopefully the talk with your school goes well!

You need to check an see what is on your record then. Is this something that can be viewed as child neglect? Not sending your child to school and having to take parenting classes and check in with a judge? Also know nursing school is a lot easier to get into than dealing with the BON down the road when it comes time to get your license. Have all your ducks in a row when going in.

Thank you to everyone for responding!!!

That doesn't really sound like you were convicted of a crime.

As part of the initial hearing, she may have technically plead either "guilty" or "no contest" and the sentence was taking the parenting classes/checking in with the judge. After all is completed, the case could have been dropped, "expunged" (which it really isn't), or reduced in severity... with it all being explained as being ultimately treated like a traffic ticket or something similar. After 10 years, the memory of exact details is probably pretty fuzzy.

My advice is as some of the others have said: find out exactly what the "charge" ultimately was and the disposition of it. While I doubt you'll be kicked out of school, you'll probably have to explain it to your BON, even if you have it legally "expunged" between now and applying for your license. Your BON may have LE access to your state's criminal database and therefore may be able to "see" everything you've officially had contact with LE about... including this particular issue.
