Did you take all non-nursing classes first?

Published

I was wondering if anyone else here took all of their non-nursing/clinical classes before actually applying to nursing school? I do not plan on actually applying to nursing school and doing my clinicals until my youngest child is in preschool which will be in four years. Would it be a good or bad idea to get them out of the way?

If I were you I would take all of my non-nursing classes before starting nursing school. Especially, since you have little children. For my first semester of nursing school I had to take A&P 1 with Fundementals of Nursing. It was nonstop studying I hardly got to spend anytime with my son. Then with Med surg 1, I had to take it with A&P 2 which was a lot harder for me than A&P 1. This spring (6 weeks instead of 12) I had to take micro and pharm together. Anything that you can get out of the way before starting nursing classes is going to help you with your time with your family. I think one of the hardest things for me going through nursing school is the amount of time I lose with my family.

I took all my prerequisites for the nursing program and all the prequisites for my BSN and MSN just so I can say I have gotten it out of the way. I am just waiting till Fall 2012 to start my RN program.

I would say it is a good idea to take them now if you can. I am already hearing from my cousins that were in BSN programs that you have no other life aside from nursing. I can't wait to see how it really is for myself.

I took all of the non-nursing classes before starting the program for a few reasons. First, it'll allow for the allocation of more time to studying your nursing coursework. Second, it is less of a load on your back (no worrying about statistics or chemistry, etc) and gives allows you to focus primarily on nursing. :) On top of all this, you can use all of your time and energy to become the best you can be in terms of nursing.

It is a very good idea to just get the pre-requisites and general courses out of the way. I'm gonna start the RN program in the Fall and after getting my 2ft tall stack of nursing books, I am very very glad all the other classes are out of the way!

I'll have all but two completed and after all I've heard and read, I think you are in the right line of thinking if you are considering getting all the non-nursing coursework out of the way. Nearly every nursing student I've spoken to who did not was overwhelmed. Even those who have are overwhelmed at times, but they say it is much more manageable.

I was able to take my time over the last couple years and I definitely feel less trepidation beginning school in the fall now that I have nearly all the non-nursing credits out of the way.

Good luck to you!

I started out @ a community college and took all of my prereqs for the ASN along with the BSN prereqs. I ended up transferring to a university and was accepted to their BSN program this fall. Like most people said, it's best if you can get all of your prereqs out of the way @least before you start your program and coreqs as well. It's not impossible to take non nursing classes along with nursing classes, you'll just be even more busier. But it's all about time management too. Good luck.

I couldn't have gotten accepted if I didn't! In my BSN program you get more points for having them done. I'll be taking 14-15 credits every semester for 5 semesters so I'm really glad I don't have any other classes!

I wish our program the nursing credits were enough for full time. The only thing I can fill my schedule with is my MSN co classes.

How many semesters are you going Camwill? I think it's interesting the differences between length of programs and difference in credits/classes taken, all for "RN".

Our program is four semesters, when I get home I can look up the credits. But our program gpa based to get in. You only need one science (anatomy, physiology, chemistry, or microbiology) college algebra, and twelve credits toward general education. When I applied I had everything but one class for the ASN program. I am going to do my colleges dual degree for my MSN so those are my filler classes now. I had 3.9 when I applied. I was lucky I only applied to my college and got on on the first try.

I will be Taking my prerequisite course this fall. and once I'm done I going to transfer to another to school to get my LPN or RN then have to another for my BSN. but once I have that i will be going again for my MSN. you my education wil never be done but it will all be work it.

At my school we have to take all our non nursing classes first. How well you do gives you points per class and then you are admitted based on your ranking. I took every class I could and made the best grades possible and was accepted into my program of choice on the first try. If you don't need any kind of basic or remedial class it should only take you 1.5-2years to finish all pre reqs if you go full time (so you can get full pell grant)! I worked my way through those until all my angels headed off to elementary school and Mommy went to nursing school!!

I personally am going to wait and take all of my prereq's before applying to my nursing program. I made this decision based on what I've read on this board and speaking with other nurses. I've heard it's a lot to transition into your nursing classes let alone juggle prereq's. Good luck in whatever you decide.
