Did you learn anything from online courses?

Published

Hello everyone,

I finished Bio 205 - Micro - online last week. I wanted to take it in person, but I couldn't get into a class until this fall. I decided to go the faster route, and took it through Rio Salado.

It was extremely well organized, and I had access to all of the needed materials, and I did pretty well in the class. But - now that the semester is over - I am beginning to feel that I didn't really retain that much. My other friends - who have taken the class in person - seem to have studied and worked much harder, and retained more. My friends who have taken it online feel the same way I do. Because of this, I'm opting to take Pathophysiology in person.

Anyway, my question is this - do you think a person can (in your experience with online class) learn just as much online? Are there any classes that you would never recommend someone take in person (like HCC 130), or any that you would NEVER take online? What are your thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the tips. I notice on the CD they tend to deep-dive on some of the small details, and it is very helpful for figuring out what is useful and what is not.

Right now since I have the time, I am basically relying heavily on the book to supplement the lessons. I notice the review quizzes tend to also deep-dive...

Thanks again!

LOVE online courses, taking two now toward RN-BSN at Oklahoma Panhandle State University. Really affordable and the format is great, instructor great, class interaction fantastic and I get to do it whenever I have time which is what I need.

I have taken every single pre-req to date online except the CNA. If it weren't for online, I couldn't do this as I travel for work. These classes are a godsend. I wouldn't say they are tough - but they are rigorous. There is a lot more memorizing because you have no idea what will appear on the exams. So I tend to study pretty hard for exams - inevitably too much!

I was tempted to do our online RN program, but I am getting kind of lonely doing everything on a computer, and want to finally link-up with "live students" for NS.

I've taken BIO 156, 201, and 205 online, along with some math classes. I really enjoy the format because I'm an independent learner. I feel like sitting in class can be beneficial sometimes, but most of the time I end up getting bored and reading ahead in my book during lectures. I like the online formats because I can spend time exactly where I need it. For example, some parts of A&P I didn't spend a lot of in-depth time on, but others I really studied. It's also nice because I can do homework whenever - an hour here, an hour there, and I don't have to plan my life around being somewhere all of the time. The downside is I have to make sure to stay disciplined and have everything in by the deadline. I have gotten "A"s in all my classes so far, so I think the online format works great for me. I just got a great day-time job though, and while I was originally intending to attend the Nursing courses in person, I am considering continuing my online studies. It really boils down to your learning style...if you are an auditory learner instead of a visual learner, you'd probably be better off in a lecture format.

I need to take an intro to pharmacology course, and since none of the colleges I live around will be offering it this spring, I need to take it online. Does anyone know anything about Minot State University's online courses, or IPFW's (Indiana Purdue Fort Wayne)?? The course through Minot State is HMS 215, and the one through IPFW is PCTX 201D - Intro to Pharmacology. Thanks!

I learn much, much more online than I do in a class. But that may be because of my personality. I am very shy with people I don't know and have a habit of turning beet red as soon as I walk through a classroom door. I still take some 'regular' classes, just because I don't want to turn into a hermit. Strangely enough, I took an interpersonal communications online and the class communicated so well that the professor commented we communicated better than her classes she taught face to face! Also, I have noticed if you take a class online you get alot more homework than you would otherwise. I don't find this to be negative at all, in fact I find myself enjoying the work. I like working on my own but I like knowing that help is there if I need it.

I don't think online classes would work for people with a procrastination disorder. You have no one to motivate you to do the work.

One class that I tried to take online and ended up dropping it was intermediate algebra. Since a math class is automatically nap time for me I thought it would be a good idea. But it turned out to be way too confusing for me.

While I'm waiting to get into nursing school I have seriously considered taking online courses for a criminal justice degree. Just something to do until I get in.

Wow , I have considered taking that Pharmacology class at Minot State online! I did check out the book and e-mail the professor for info, but I have not heard anything.

I did not know IPFW had an online class. I will have to check it out

I took many of my prereqs online, and absolutely loved it! With my night work schedule, it's really hard to get off work at 7:30, go home for a couple hours (maybe nap, but that's risky because I don't want to get back up!), go to class, then come home, sleep a bit more, deal with teenagers, then go back to work! I only have A&P2 and micro left, which I am taking on campus at MCC in the spring. I would love to take the online courses at Rio, but my financial aid is through MCC, and I was told I couldn't do it. So I will be going to class 5 days a week, plus working 3-4 nights a week for the entire semester. Gonna be killer!!!!!
