Something someone I was PMing said has got me thinking. Did you find it hard to get hired on at a hospital here in AZ (more specifically the PHX area)? Did you have to start out in a different area than you really wanted to work in?
I never really thought of this considering the nursing shortage. It seems as though most of the people on this board have no problems getting hired on to a hospital as a new grad so I was wondering about the Phoenix metro area specifically. Did you have a problem?
I really want to work with kids, be it PEDS or NICU (probably more so PEDS). I just never really considered that it may be hard to get hired on as a new grad. If that's the case then maybe it's best to get good grades in the pre-req's and apply to the Banner or Scottsdale program where you work for them in exchange for tuition.

I graduated from nursing school in AZ and I have quite a few friends that got positions in NICU, PICU, Peds ER, OB, etc. without any problem. I know with critical care, they are currently doing an extensive orientation, and most hospitals have an orientation... so no worries there. I also know that there is a children's hospital in Phoenix and I have friends working there as new grads.
Best of luck!

No problems whatsoever here. I wanted to be in transplantation which left Mayo or Good Sam. I already have a job offer from Good Sam and I don't graduate for a month. I had absolutely no problem getting an extern job either during my last semester! I don't think you will have a problem at all getting into Peds at most anywhere you want.
Best of luck,
Lu Ann

No, getting into a new grad program in any one of those specialties should be NO problem, as long as you start applying early enough. Phx has a big nursing shortage and lots of great hospitals with great new grad programs that are willing to hire new grads into those areas. You just have to apply early enough to get a spot. Good luck to you!
