Did anyone hate nursing school?

Nurses New Nurse

Published

I am in second semester and I am just sooooo tired and run down. Every week I feel like quitting. I have an hour commute and 2 small kids so thats an added difficulty. Is it normal to dislike nursing school so much? I know Im probably just not thinking clearly at this point being so exhausted, but please tell me it all pays off in the end!

I, like many others worked toward this goal for so long, just trying to get in. I have always loved school. But since becoming an actual nursing student, I can barely get B's much less A's. I guess I thought nursing school would be so fun and interesting and full of cool new things to experience. But hard instructors and hours of clinical are more the case. And I feel so dumb all the time!

Just trying to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I need help seeing the good in it again. Thanks.......better go study!

I think this thread is hilarious!

I, too, hate nursing school! It's almost over, thank God!

And those of you who think nursing school was wonderful, must be in a different program!

Oh yes! I can certainly relate and trust me you are NOT alone! My program has been 16 mths .. although I do have medical background experience, this somewhat helped and also have been going to school for most my life (haha) I knewo what I was going to be enduring.. and sometimes it was so much to bear that I finally started using my gym membership again, bought a calendar where I can mark off the days, found this website, and bought a ipod! I think those were the best things and they all helped me through it. I am not married and my daughter is already 14, but I also worked near fulltime 30-34 hrs a week, then gym, school, homework, dinner, and honestly I had to let some things 'go' and nursing school wasnt going to be one of them!!!! So I let some of the housework and yardwork go even though as a somewhat obsessive compulsive it drove me crazy and made me feel like a lazy slob. I also wasnt going to slack @ being a mom or @ my job. when I was super stressed I went to the gym 3x a week and worked out like a crazy cardio woman!! doing 8 miles 3 x a week ... and now my calendar says I have 7 days left!!!! I also had a counter online thats been counting down the days... I remember at one point halfway thru school the counter STILL said 178 days!!!! I was holy tamale! And now .. literally graduation is around the corner... and let me tell you... towards the end it gets somewhat easier ... when its done you can relax ... and also think of it this way... each day look at what youre accomplishing ... !! You should be proud! hang in there...

RELAX??........RELAX???........No disrespect, but as a new grad RN on a busy med/surg floor there is NO relaxing........NONE!:o

Yeah I feel the same about the course! It is hard work, and there is lots of it, it is exhausting! I am always tired, then there are the inconsistancies between markers, and policies and procedures!!

BUT, in the end it will be soooooooo worth it. I have two more semesters to go (it is a three yr degree here) I love the work, (I'm a nurses aide) and can't wait to be a RN!

Not long now, 12 months....

I agree with the camaraderie, I have such a great group of friends, friends that will last a lifetime.

More than anything I've experienced in my 41 years. The politics were the stuff nightmares are made from!!

I just have one more final to take and I am finished. My advice? Stay below the radar and do not make waves NO MATTER WHAT.

Yes, hate is such a stronge word I would say I never would think nursing would be so challenging. I currently have my second shot at it in january wish me luck yallll

Oh No . . . . you guys are scaring me and I haven't even got started yet . . . to nursing school that is! Hopefully start in Fall 08. What's your best advice to survive the beginning of nursing school . . . besides studying hard, of course!

Have to say for me my Nursing School days were fun.

Learnt a lot about Sabby and learnt to grow as a team player with my other cohorts.

Would not change a thing. :)

Thanks for the reply Sabby! I want to go into the nursing program with an open mind and hope that I find it fun and rewarding as well.

P.S. I love your "short is devine"! Oh, where do you live in NC. My best friend lives in Sylva about 1 or so from Ashville I think.

i hated nursing school, i would rather have bamboo sticks put under my finger nails than ever go back again. thank heaven i am done.. i sign my RN and never have to crack a book again... school was a never ending nightmare... never ever again

HEHE, I have never heard anyone describe nursing school as fun. For me it is ( I graduate in January) a brutal, emotionally exhausting experience. My school / program was full of political BS and to survive my particular program you had to be one of three things. Either Super smart (not me) or Stubborn (ME) or have a lot of time/finance backing so you could go to school part time or repeat classes. (not me)

In the end it worth it (I hope), but I believe we all struggle.

I AM FINISHING MY PROGRAM NEXT MONTH, JAN. 2008. FOR THE PAST 4 YEARS I FEEL LIKE I HAVE SLOWLY TRANSFORMED INTO SOME SOCIALLY HANDICAPPED, ANXIETY RIDDEN, BLURRY MINDED, NUT CASE!!! ALL THAT'S ON MY MIND IS HTN, TIA'S, PTL, CVA'S, COPD, DM, PERSONALITY DO'S, PIH, SIDS, HSV, AND SO ON AND SO ON.... WHO KNEW THERE WERE SO MANY ABBREVIATIONS? NOW THAT I AM AT THE END THINGS SEEM TO BE CLEARING UP. THIS JOURNEY HAS ENTAILED A LOT OF HARD WORK, BUT WHEN IT IS OVER I JUST KNOW I AM GOING TO FEEL LIKE A MILLION BUCKS. NURSING SCHOOL ADDS CHARACTER, HUMILITY, ENDURANCE, AND A HARD WORK ETHIC TO EVERY ONE OF ITS VICTIMS. IF YOU ASK ME, IT'S A PRETTY FAIR TRADE..........:uhoh3:
