Did anyone hate nursing school?

Nurses New Nurse

Published

I am in second semester and I am just sooooo tired and run down. Every week I feel like quitting. I have an hour commute and 2 small kids so thats an added difficulty. Is it normal to dislike nursing school so much? I know Im probably just not thinking clearly at this point being so exhausted, but please tell me it all pays off in the end!

I, like many others worked toward this goal for so long, just trying to get in. I have always loved school. But since becoming an actual nursing student, I can barely get B's much less A's. I guess I thought nursing school would be so fun and interesting and full of cool new things to experience. But hard instructors and hours of clinical are more the case. And I feel so dumb all the time!

Just trying to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I need help seeing the good in it again. Thanks.......better go study!

I enjoyed nursing school for the most part. I couldnt believe it when it was over though..check off's were the most stressful things ive ever done and putting in an IV when your instructor is hovering over you is not my cup of tea. i was so over it at the end but i felt like i was a part of something great and there was no one else in the world going through the same experience as the people in that room sooooo that made it easier bcus we were all in it together!

It is soooooo worth it though. I just passed my NCLEX and i am an RN and got my first job in tele. I cant wait to start...what a great identity it is to be an RN.

I'm so happy that my classmates and I aren't the only ones who are hating nursing school. We are in our second semester and we haven't learned anything. All we are doing in the hospital is giving baths, chaning linens, and taking vitals. The hospital we are at starting letting their CNA's and PCA's go home because we were doing all their work. I feel like I'm not learning anything, they give us all this paperwork to do the night before on our patient, then they give us quizzes DURING our clinicals. While on top of that we have 2-3 test a week for our theory class and diet therapy class. We aren't getting any clinical experience I feel like, I feel when I get into the real world I'm going to be as incompetent as I am now. I hope that being an actual RN is way better than being a nursing student. Because I HATE nursing school- the stress, emotions, and anxiety it gives me is ridiculous.

Can't help you with most of the B* you are having to put up with in school-but patient contact time is your opportunity to start thinking like a nurse without any of the scary responsibility. The most valuable tool I gained from my clinicals was the ability to do a rapid but thorough head to toe assessment on almost any patient in about 5 minutes. If you have basically said "Good morning/ how are you?" to them and they have responded, you can have assessed mental status, neuro, pain, general well-being. If you have helped them wash/ toilet/eat you have assessed skin/ wounds/ bladder/ bowel/ input/ output. A quick listen to bowel sounds/ lung sounds, a pulse check is all I add as a nurse that I wouldn't have done as a CNA. If you are allowed to do these, get in all the practice you can. Even if not, start training yourself to be observant-with all your senses. Start making those connections between what you see in your patient and their acute or chronic conditions/ reason for being in the hospital. Skin yellow? Any liver problems in the history? Extremities cold/ dusky?-poor circulation? GI bleed or C Diff? Very distinctive odor-wise. Tremor? Audible lung wheezing? If nothing else you will be in the best position to determine over the course of the day if there has been any change from the pt's baseline. Even if you have to suck it up,you can still soak it in-as much as you can! Go for it!

I absolutely hated, hated nursing school and wanted to quit every semester, BUT I stayed with it and now am very happy 3 1/2 yrs into being a home health nurse. My happiness with nursing started when I found my niche.

I hate nursing school, too...... Somebody needs to warn future nursing students about how awful this is..... I have a degree from another college and I HAD NO IDEA nurses when through such rigors to become nurses.

Yes it was awful. I almost dropped out after every semester!

I am going to be in my 3rd semester, in an ADN program, and I am scared to death of nursing school. The adult nursing class that I will be taking is purportedly the hardest one! Does anyone have any advice for studying? I have a Saunders NCLEX comprehensive review book and CD I have been working on a few hours a day over the summer. There is just so much it makes me feel overwhelmed and like that I can never possibly remember it all. And I realize on a daily basis that I don't know squat!
