Did anyone hate nursing school?

Published

I am in second semester and I am just sooooo tired and run down. Every week I feel like quitting. I have an hour commute and 2 small kids so thats an added difficulty. Is it normal to dislike nursing school so much? I know Im probably just not thinking clearly at this point being so exhausted, but please tell me it all pays off in the end!

I, like many others worked toward this goal for so long, just trying to get in. I have always loved school. But since becoming an actual nursing student, I can barely get B's much less A's. I guess I thought nursing school would be so fun and interesting and full of cool new things to experience. But hard instructors and hours of clinical are more the case. And I feel so dumb all the time!

Just trying to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I need help seeing the good in it again. Thanks.......better go study!

Well, my clinical with the instructor who is like judge judy on crack is tomorrow and I'm sooooooooo traumatized that I have to endure her wrath tomorrow that I've been downing a bottle of wine for the last hour........let me tell ya I feel MUCH better! Hopefully, I won't need AA when I'm done with this program in May! Actually, this teacher is 1/2 a semester so I'll be done with her soon unless she fails me..........

Are you kidding? I hated, yes hated, nursing school. It was awful. Being a nurse on the other hand is great!! It is frustrating, irritating, challenging, heart wrenching at times and extremely satisfying. When you know you have made a positive difference in someone's life!! There is nothing better in my book.

Hang in there.

So far, I'm not liking it so much either. I'm in 2nd semester and it's just SO much to learn and so little time to learn it. Clinical is stressful because of all the paperwork and care plans they make you do. It's good to hear from others who have made it that it's completely different in the end. I was starting to wonder since I dislike NS so much that maybe I wouldn't like being a nurse either. May 08 is the end for me. It still seems so far away but I know it'll be here before I know it.

It's worth it. Just don't give up. I remember I was so stressed and exhausted by the end of nursing school that it took me some time to settle down....then I had the NCLEX to think about..... ;)

I don't think I hate it , I'm just on the verge of hating one of my instructors. I love/hate her most of the time

I didn't realize how much I hated it and how stressed out I was until it was over and the totally smothered feeling suddenly stopped. Seriously, I felt like I was floating on clouds for a month after I graduated, even with the NCLEX in the middle of that month.

Actually being a nurse is harder, but much easier to bear, I think. You aren't being bogged down with nonsense; at the end of the day, you go home and sleep and the slate is cleaned; all the stuff you struggled to learn for so long makes sense because you see it in action; you can write long run on sentences with horrible grammar and no one cares; people actually listen to you and you feel like you matter and aren't a little hopping insect. It's great. Hard. But great.

You said it very well, BlueEyed RN. It's harder as a nurse...more responsibility,...but it's easier to bear. Now you're memorizing things because you know you want to have it in your brain for convenience and safety...not just to get through another test. And the respect that comes with those initials is immediate. Again...much different than the way we were treated in school.

Wow Im sooo glad you guys all feel like me. (well not glad....but you know what I mean) I thought I was the only one who hated it, because at school everyday it seems like everyone is trying to put their best face forward and seem confident and pulled together. We rarely have moments of break down, but its nice when we do because then you know your not alone in feeling torn down. The other day we were talking in the locker room and one of the girls was like 'yeah i went home and cried to my boyfriend after clinical Monday night and told him I was gonna quit blah blah blah' and I was like 'Oh my god me too! I go home crying every Monday night!' (we get off at 11pm)

So it was nice to know I wasnt the only one on the edge of insanity! Let me tell you, I commute an hour each way to school and sometimes dont get home till 1 am and then have to get up again at 4 am to get back to lecture by 8 am- so it takes every fiber of my being to keep going..........

It better be worth it!!

YES!!!!!! Except for pedi and maternity.

I've hated it!!! But only a couple of more weeks and I'm DONE! Thank God!

I've always been a good student, straight A's, study alot, learn the nitty gritty details....and I was actually looking forward to going to nursing school so that I could learn alot of medical related stuff. Sadly I spent the first two years doing "fluff". Essays upon essays about professionalism, caring, therapeutic touch, feelings, the power of a smile, critical thinking, decision making, leadership, etc. Ya, sure the stuff is important, but I felt like I was in the wrong place....I mean, I was in school for a degree, and was being tested on bedmaking.

I was ready for intensive education, instead I felt like I was just doing time. I'm the kinda person where I want to just cut-the-crap, and get down to busines.....nursing school was clearly the wrong place for that.

Anyways, four years later I'm glad to say I'm nearly done! Good luck to anyone else who's still plugging away through school.

 i think the true question is, who dosent?

I am also a second semester nursing student with a previous bachelor's degree. Former straight A student. After clinicals, I find myself continuously asking, "Is this really worth all the stress and anxiety?" There's hardly any support from instructors and none from administration. Fellow classmates, though, are very supportive. There's a lot of politics and workload stress.

Good luck!!
