I as some of you may know I am starting the LPN program in September. Sometimes I feel really nervous about being able to handle the things that gross you out in nursing. I really want to become a nurse because I am very good with people and I feel as if I would be able to have a very up-beat attitude, but did anyone else feel this way. As far as when it came to drawing blood or dealing with people with different diseases. Is it normal to be nervous and do you usually over come it?
Thank you very much for any replies I recieve :)
I am getting ready to go to school for my LPN.. and you know what scares me? its not the bllod or anything like that ( cause for 2 years i was a cna) I am already scared about taking the boards!!!!!!!!!!and i have not even started lpn school yet..
With all due respect, you are probably nervous about the boards because you haven't started school yet. Therefore, you don't have any idea what the whole thing entails. As hard as it may seem, you need to focus on the here and now, boards will come in due time. The instructors are there esentially to prepare you for the boards. It will work out!! :)

I will be graduating my LPN course in 2 days.. I too had fears of hurling or fainting at the sight of gross stuff, but by facing it I got over it. I watched a c-section in the ER which was one of my biggest fears (blood, gore), but the anticipation and sight of the newborn and the joy of the mom and dad was awesome. Just think of the good you are doing, the relief of pain or uncomfortableness, the attention and care you are providing will help you overcome the fear. In other words, make it not so self-centered. Be around others when you anticipate these feelings and they will help you get through it. Lastly, keep doing what you fear, avoidance makes it worse. Good luck and don't let anything get in your way of your greater goals!!! :) BTW, I am 46 years old... have gotten over a lot of fears with this same philosophy....

You are not alone. I am a 48 year old LVN Student with 4 1/2 months to graduation. I am scared every day I go to clinical, sometimes sick to my stomach. I get good grades 94% (most of the time) with the exception of a 75% last week! But I am so worried about doing injections, calculating meds, etc. But you know if I just do it and not take the time to worry about it, it always turns out ok and I feel so much better for accomplishing the procedure whatever it is. I believe all of us are scared and from what I hear from other students it is normal. You have to wonder about the ones who say they aren't scared. It does get easier as you are able to gain skills and do things more than the first time. I would only encourage you to go forward. If this old nursing student can do it so can you. I have a 20 yr old going into the RN program this year also. I plan to continue taking my pre-reqs to apply to the LVN Bridge to RN program even though I'll be over 50 when I finish. We need to support each other. I need support and encouragement too. But if I can help, just let me know. Susan (California LVN Student hanging on by a thread each day!!! :chuckle
I was scared to death. I didn't even want to be a nurse, wanted to be a teacher, but my mom and dad talked me in to it my sr. year in high school. I was a gutless wonder then. Never thought I would make it through, but they knew me better than I knew myself. It's been 19 years now and I can't imagine doing anything else. The nervousness goes away. I had one of the weakest stomachs ever as a kid, but that to went away pretty quick. Can handle about anything now. Hang in there.:)
NancyJo,
Wanted to take the time to thank you a million times for this post! My eyes ran straight to this thread because I have also been curious about others' fears and nervousness when it came to starting out in the LPN Program. Your post was ironic to me because I've also wanted to be a teacher my entire life. I've even went to college for teaching courses, but changed my major to Practical Nursing for this semester. I didn't think I could ever see myself as anything other than a teacher. Nursing had always crossed my mind, but I didn't think I could do it, because of my weak stomach....but it seems it's getting less and less weak and I truly don't think I could see myself doing anything else. Teaching just wasn't for me after all. You're an inspiration. I wish you the best of luck in the continuing of your nursing journey!
