Did anybody see "Monk?"

Did anyone watch "Monk," the show on USA channel starring Tony Shaloub as an obsessive compulsive detective this past Friday night? I am very upset at how a nurse was depicted in Friday's episode. Monk's regular assistant, Sharonna, needed to take some time off and she arranged for an acquantance, an RN, to fill in for her. Before this RN ( I am sorry, I didn't catch her name) even walked into Monk's home, she was yelling and being very unprofessional and bossy. As soon as she walked in, she told Monk, 'I have to pee....to make my bladder gladder..' Then she proceeded to tell him how it would be and how he should be.

She told him that she always took an hour for lunch and required a TV during that hour and that she finished her day at exactly 5:30. She went through his refrigerator (without asking) and took whatever she wanted to eat. And so forth and so on. I was very offended and upset by the whole thing. I know that there have been posts here in the past about the nurses on ER but this was MUCH worse. Did anyone else see it?

Yup, I saw it. I was a little put off by it too - really didn't seem like a nurse at all.

I think her name was Varla, or something like that. I honestly just thought she was funny! Very abrasive personality, that's all, we all know nurses like that, I'm sure. Besides, didn't she end up saving the day in the end by finding the written first draft of Sharonna's short story? :)

I liked her!! She may have been unprofessional and bossy but maybe that's why she doesn't work in a hospital! (I assume she didn't) Also if she's privaty duty, she can demand an hour lunch and a TV! :)

Her attitude actually could be just what certain patients need. A firm hand to help them convalesce is not unheard of.

I saw the episode (I watch the series regularly), and just thought it was funny. Yes, the nurse filling in for Sharonna was portrayed in a pretty unflattering light, but Sharonna is also a nurse and is always portrayed v. positively. If "Varla" were the only time they ever showed a nurse on the show, I might take offense.

I didn't watch the show -- don't watch much TV as a rule anyway -- but did see clips for it -- I guess I must be getting old, 'cause stuff like that doesn't rattle my cage all that much. If it were a documetary on nursing or something like that and they had chosen someone like that to represent nurses -- I might get more yanked. I agree, it would be oodles better if nurses were portrayed more accurately in the media and yes, the public has a warped perception of what nurses are and do based on the twisted portrayals in the media ..... but then so are police officers, lawyers, doctors, firemen, housewives, stay-at-home dads, religious people, teenagers..........................

I am starting to care very little about what the media portrays as what. They insult the intelligence of everyone, regardless of career, or even gender. Going by what you see on TV, one would think that there is no male anywhere capable of changing a baby's diaper without having to call a helpline for assistance, women vacuum their houses in evening gowns, all parents everywhere are idiots yet kids know everything about everything.

Don't you wear a formal when you clean?! If I have a particularily messy chore I might remove the pearls.....

But then, I only need to do the "light cleaning" because the help does the other stuff!:chuckle
