I am a nurse in New Jersey, but my son is a dialysis patient in Texas. Thankfully he is healthy and handles it well, and he made the transplant list. But he called me yesterday and told me that there was one RN and 3 techs for 16 patients yesterday on his side and the same on the other side. Does anyone know the staffing ratios in Texas? That sound unsafe to me.

Sounds unsafe.

i do believe it is one nurse for q12 patients. each tech takes 4 patients. whether a nurse takes pts or not, the ratio is 12:1. (correct me if I'm wrong y'all.)

That sounds about right...with 16, I've had 3 techs, taken my 4 pts..and do all the meds, assessments, CN...etc...Not a great situation but it is possible...hopefully, nothing goes wrong!!!
i'm never really worried about the actual safety of it at my clinic. on our short days (with 12 morning, 8 afternoon) there is only one nurse on the actual floor. but we've got my boss (RN), the ladies in PD and home hemo in the back (RN's). plenty of nurses to go around! I'll be one of em soon enough!
