Dialysis rn looking for change - possibly travel

Published

Hi there! I'm a diploma rn with 14 yrs experience and 6 yrs dialysis experience. I LOVE hemodialysis but have run into some bumpy roads at the center where I'm employed. RN's cover all of the acute cases in the local hospital and until recently have rotated this duty. We work 10 hrs sometimes without a break so this is not a fun rotation. Due to a new contract obtained by our company, we have another hospital to cover and I'm to work acutes pts only. This may be the straw..... Anyway, I'm seriosly considering travel nursing (dialysis), particularly in the caribben (USVI) and would like any input any of you can give me. I have a husband that would travel with me. Currently I'm making approx 26/hr .

thanks!

If you would like to try your hand at working on a cruise, check out http://www.dialysisatsea.com. I don't know anyone personally who's worked a cruise, but it seems fascinating! :)

Also try foundations.com. They specialize in dialysis travel ONLY and have full benefits. I agree....you'll be snapped up in a hurry....have fun....and make more money. Happy travels!

Specializes in Nephrology, Cardiology, ER, ICU.

I love St. Thomas - small hospital - about 160 beds but wow - what beautiful weather and the people are wonderful too. Just did a vacation there in July and can't wait to go back!

Specializes in Acute/Chronic hemodialysis.

Hi Theresa,

I am a dialysis travel nurse. I work with Foundation Medical Staffing. Joe Hill is my recruiter. He is great! No high pressure.

I have recently started my 3rd contract with them. They work hard to place you where you want to go. Please feel free to PM me.

There are 4 other companies that place primarily dialysis that I am aware of:

I have only traveled with Foundation. They have always worked very hard to keep me within a 300 mile radius from home as this is important to me. The other companies contact me regularly to keep me informed of opportunities they have available.

Good luck! :coollook:

Hello trvlnRN. Are you still out there? I first read about your travels in an RV ~ 2 years ago and have been working hard toward that goal ever since. I recently sold my home and moved into a small apartment. I've been to several RV shows and have decided on buying a Travel Trailer and pulling it with a Pickup Truck. I've worked for the last 4 years as a Medical Case Manager in Workers' Comp. I recently completed an RN Refresher course and I now need to make a decision: I had planned on specializing in the Emergency Dept., but noticed that you work in dialysis. Could you give me some pros and cons of working as a Travel Nurse in the ED vs. Dialysis? Thanks, Jim RN, BSN
