question are all dialysis patients anuric? my patient goes for dialysis 4x a day and she is anuric. i don't know why.she also had an open heart surgery

Not all. There are many stages of renal failure. Think of the kidneys....they excrete water from the body but also act as a filter system. Anuria means you are missing both. A dialysis pt can still pee but lacks filtering. Dialysis acts on two mechanisms....Removing fluid and ultra-filtration. Chronic dialysis pt get both but if someone suffers from acute tubular necrosis, they may need more one verses the other. If your pt is getting dialysis often, they probably needed to remove fluid or needed to correct electrolytes. Sometimes dialysis is done based symptoms of lab work. I had a pt that had dialysis done every day for two weeks. If they are having any number of issues from imbalances, dialysis will be done. But the kidneys have the ability to remove some water, even in failure. Anuria is more end-stage renal failure.

Also, pts with ESRD usually are 3 days a week not 4 tx's. Unless they are doing nxstage or PD.

4x a day?! thats about 16 hours of dialysis.. does she just do them one after another? i hope you meant 4x a week..
