For now, California is the only state in the union with legally-mandated nurse/patient ratios. There are no other states that have legally-mandated ratios, and Texas is included. When I was employed at a local psych hospital, it was normal for the RN to have responsibility over 10+ patients on day shift and 20+ on nights.
Your salary as a psych nurse really depends upon the hospital in which you'll practice and the years of experience you have. New grads generally start at about $22-$24 hourly.
