Hello,I am entering an adult NP program in January. I would like to eventually work in a Dermatology office. However, I can't find any information on how to go about gaining experience in that speciality, or if there is another program I should be attending. As far as I know, one cannot specialize in Derm in school. The school I am going to be attending is not very helpful. Does anyone know?? I come across adds looking for Derm NPs but they require experience. Where do you get your training?? Is there an additional certification?? Thanks so much. Any answers are appreciated as I am quite confused.
I would definitely work in primary care for at least a year before specializing. Also, as an Adult NP, you will only be able to see ages 13 and up. I'm not sure how many children see the derm, so you might want to find out before specializing as an Adult NP.
My close friend and fellow FNP classmate wound up getting hired as a NP in a derm practice. He knew the derm. from the hospital where he worked as a RN and then started working at the doc's office P/T (with the doc telling him he would be hired as a NP once he graduated) learning the ins and outs while he was still in NP school. Once he passed the boards and received his license, he did on the job training as a NP for several weeks and learned how to do some minor procedures.
He said that he sees a LOT of children/babies at the office, so depending on the derm practice - FNP might be the way to go.
