Next week I will give my deposition for a case involving a CP baby. I was the L&D nurse for the 7p-7a shift. I have never given my deposition with the presence of video cameras/court stenographer/7 lawyers. Can anyone give some great advise on how to tell the truth in the presence of "mucho" intimidation. I was able to watch my fellow co-worker give her deposition about 1 month ago. It was not pleasant.

Sounds to me like the one being sued is the Doctor. I hve only bee to one depo but know that you become nervous and worried and then you listen and realize tha you can truly shine past it all.

It turned out that the reason I was there was because of my excellent documentation and it was a comparison tool. Just understand that Nurses are there a part of the day and the Dr. takes the flack for 24 hrs/day. You are there due to being assigned the patient and they will ask you if you remember the patient.

Words of advice... listen intently to the Hospital's attorney. Don't volunteer anything.

Textbook definitions would suffice, with no personal interpretation. They are certainly aware of the definitions of those terms, if they ask they will expect an answer along those lines. It seems to me if someone tries to blur the definitions it just decreases their credibility. Just my two cents though.

I have been to one deposition, I just answered truthfully to the best of my knowledge, said I did not know when I did'nt. One thing to watch for is a question regarding what someon else would do in a particular situation...for instance

So, would Dr. N usually perform _____ procedure under ____circumstances?

I tended to answer these types of questions with: I am not that person, therefore I can not tell you what their usual response would be......or something along those lines.

I remember distinctly come to think of it with that question if I was someone else what would I do?

Hey, do I have a license to practice medicine I said? No. Did I work for someone else? No. Reflect that question back and ask what if you were theNurse lol.

Seriously, you stick to documentation on paper. DO NOT TRY TO INTERPRET ANYTHING!!!! If it was written, that's it. No more.
