I will be taking a online patho soon and was looking to buy a laptop, looking very heavily at dell. Until I was recently informed that to upgrade a dell was a little complicated? Anyone own a laptop or will soon purchase one have advice for what brand may be slightly better than some others? I want to have it for at least a few years before worrying about having to get a new one any help would be great thanks.

Difficult to upgrade? I don't think so. They are pretty much the same as with any other laptop. You can add memory if you need it, and there are USB ports to add on any hardware your heart desires. And if you want to change the operating system if any new one comes out in the future, then that is just a software change, not a hardware issue. Just shop around for what you are looking for in the price range that fits your budget. Look at memory, processor speeds, etc.

I'm also in the market for a laptop. I was initially leaning towards HP but I quickly changed my mind when I read the reviews of their horrid battery life. 2 hours 15mins or so if you are lucky and very stingy with screen settings, etc.

I HATE to have to be tethered to a plug so I've been leaning heavily towards Dell now. They seem to get great reviews for the most part and the price is right. Good battery life too.

If you can afford it, get one with a little extra memory for faster running speeds especially when running multiple applications. It seems the new Vista operating system sucks up precious memory so get a 2.O dual core Intel processor at a bare minimum.

Having come from an AMD processor on my home desktop I will be staying away from AMD for the laptop. I had lots of heat problems with the AMD at home even with the side panel off and this is in a semi large computer case. Imagine all that heat in the tiny confines of a laptop case. Ouch!

Special31, I tried to pm you back but you're not accepted email/pm's. But I bought a Dell XPS for school and love it. I own 3 three dell's and haven't had any problems out of any of them. If I had the money and time to learn a new computer I probably would have gotten a Mac but the XPS I have works great and is very powerful. Plus it's really lightweight so it will be easy to carry around. Hope this helps, and let me know if you have any other questions. Chris

Hey there:

I also have a Dell XPS and absolutely love it! You can always order it to your specifications with more memory or whatever too........

I am female and my claim to fame as far as computer knowledge is knowing how to shop online, he he. However I just recently upgraded my Dell laptop RAM to a dual card 2g by myself, zero help except the online instructions. SUPER easy. I have owned various brands of computer but I love the Dell XPS line. I have a laptop and desk XPS setup.
