Delirium room/ delirium unit

Hello,

My name is Berthina and i am a geriatric nurse from the Netherlands. We are developing a deliriumunit at my ward. We well be the first hospital in the Netherlands that have such an unit.

I was wondering if there are deliriumunits in hospitals in the UK. I can't find anything about it on the internet so maybe you can help me out.

If there are delieriumunits in the UK, me and a few of my collegues are thinking about comming to visit.

Do you know any hospitals in the UK that have deliriumunits? Other than the ones on de ICU?

But we do have dedicated dementia/Alzheimer's units. That's probably the closest thing to what OP is questioning.

And there is the geropsych subspecialty of nsg practice.

I have not seen any "real" delirium units......we have geriatric units and Alzheimer units....bu ones for specifically delirium...I have not sen any......however......There have been some studies about delirium rooms......a simple Google search for delirium rooms (two words) ........

Researchers at Saint Louis University report that elderly patients with delirium do better if they are placed together and cared for in the Delirium Room, essentially a four-bed intensive care unit. This approach conflicts with the traditional approach of separating such patients.

New Way Of Treating Elderly Patients With Delirium Defies Conventional Medical Wisdom

Delirium is a common and serious condition, which affects many of our older hospitalised patients. It is an indicator of severe underlying illness and requires early diagnosis and prompt treatment, associated with poor survival, functional outcomes with increased risk of institutionalisation following the delirium episode in the acute care setting. We describe a new model of delirium care in the acute care setting, titled Geriatric Monitoring Unit (GMU) where the important concepts of delirium prevention and management are integrated. We hypothesize that patients with delirium admitted to the GMU would have better clinical outcomes with less need for physical and psychotropic restraints compared to usual care.

A simple unambiguous care environment that restores a sense of control and promotes self-efficacy is the foundation of delirium management. Patients who have experienced an episode of delirium report that simple but firm communication, reality orientation, a visible clock and the presence of a relative contribute to a heightened sense of control. Light music-listening therapy (McCaffrey & Locsin, 2004) can prevent understimulation while also buffering against noise extremes. Exposure to delirium risk factors and mortality can be reduced by moving the patient to a ‘delirium room’ – a small specialised unit devoted to comprehensive delirium-oriented treatment that minimises risk, aggravating factors and medication use with daily multidisciplinary reviews of progress (Flaherty et al, 2003).
