Is it a hugh priority to deal with dehyration before going into surgery?

Yes, dehydration must be corrected before surgery. Surgery causes blood loss and can put the patient at risk for developing hypovolemia, this could lead to shock and death. Review the pre-operative chapter in any med-surg book and it will explain all pre-op preperations and possible complications.

Not necessarily. I went into emergency surgery 2 weeks ago dehydrated. The surgery had to be done. I was given fluids and blood transfusions.

It's true that surgery can be done with dehydrated patients, particularly if it's unavoidable. However, well-hydrated patients are easier to cannulate, have fewer intraoperative complications, better outcomes, and fewer post-operative effects (like nausea).

Yes, but come on! It was emergency surgery.
If it had not been an emergency, they would have had you better hydrated and made you wait a day or so before going in!
