Decided to go Medical Assistant and discouraged

Published

I am discouraged the reason why is because where I live everything is impacted schools and job openings. I feel like I am out of time and I just need something fast to move on with my life . I only make a caregivers salary , I can't make that all my life and I really need to get the ball rolling. So I decided to take the easy way out and get my degree in and Medical Assisting . I am 21 year old mom and I and my husband works ,works and works some more. He puts pressure on me to go out and make the big bucks and I feel like I am just getting rushed he does not understand that getting your degree in nursing doesn't happen overnight. I am an excellent caregiver /nurse assistant I am content with my career but the pay is way to low .So Medical Assisting is my out , with living in southern california everything is sooooooo congested it makes me sick to think about the future economy

I hope that you can take some constructive suggestions. From reading your past posts, I notice that sometimes you can be a bit impulsive or impatient. Being 21 is not an old person and you do have time to make changes in your life. At best, you should not make choices that will waste more time and money. Medical Assistants do not make big bucks. In fact, most of the time, they are overcharged for their training, limited to working in the doctor's office and the money they may make usually does not make even a dent in the student loans they have accrued. And, if you are thinking about the economy, wasting energy and resources will make you even angrier. In fact, with the hours of most outpatient clinics being basically 9-5, some Saturdays, if you decided to return to your nursing dream, it would be even harder unless you quit your job and become even more of an issue to your husband. I want to make a point and say that I am not degrading Medical Assistants; it is just that it is not a regulated position. Some people can walk off of the street, receive training from the staff to do what they do and even some CNAs have taken additional classes in EKG and phlebotomy to be able to work as one.

I thought I remembered hearing that you were about to enter into an LPN program a few months ago...what happened to that opportunity?

Your husband does not sound like he has a clear picture of what it takes to prepare for a career...it does take time. Do what is best for YOU in the longrun, not just to make him happy. Good luck.
