I stared as a CNA on Mother/Baby in 2009. did that for 2 years and loved it, then went into the surgical technology program and as I graduated moved to L&D as an OB Scrub Tech. one year after doing that I went back,to,school for my BSN which I will complete in December. the plan is to stay in L&D but everytime someone asks about where do I want to work , I freak out and I don't know what to say. after 4 years I still feel that I don't belong. there's too many groups and too many bff's ruling the unit and I'm not there to play with my BFF. I'm there to learn and work. such a hard decision!!!!!!

Maybe look at L&D at another facility?

Many, many people find it difficult to change roles in the same place. Going from CNA /scrub tech to RN is going to challenge your coworkers and could make it more difficult to assume the RN role than if you were just coming in as a new grad hire from somewhere else. The way I see it, you have two choices:

1) Give it a try, and specifically ask your charge nurse (privately) how best to handle any such conflicts or challenges

1a) Stick it out for a year and see if your role change makes the BFF thang better. If not, you have a year of solid experience to take to ...

2) Apply to L&D elsewhere. Say you have had some great experiences and been able to observe a lot in the X years you spent as a CNA and scrub tech in L&D, but you feel it would be better to start as an RN in a new milieu.

that sounds like a plan Grn Tea! I absolutely love the labor process and all that and have been there as scrub tech for almost 4 years makes me believe that I could actually could do this. This 4 years experience puts me in a way better position than a brand new nurse just because I already know how everything is done, now the protocols and now all the doctors and what they like and what they don't like. some of the BFF's are leaving so by the time its my turn to start as a new nurse there, they might be gone so it might be a little easier on me. I know that is where I want to be. No question about that !!! thanks for you feedback!
