I am very new to the idea of travel nursing, so looking for as much input as possible. I am looking to move to the DC metro/N. Va area this fall. Is it possible to be a travel nurse but stay in one city?
Which companies provide private housing, as my boyfriend would be with me... or is that even a possibility?
Any agencies to avoid?
I have 21 months experience on a busy interventional cardiology floor at a major hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Also have worked in pediatric home health for 4 years (I know that doesn't matter much to a hospital).
Is the pay that much better as a traveler if you take housing?
Just looking for some ideas on where to go next. I already have my VA nurses license, I need to get my DC one soon.
Thanks :)

Hello: DC licensing takes forever unless you go there physically - I hear that process is much quicker. I actually just completed my 2nd assignment in DC and it went well :) I did work with other travelers who did work at other area hospitals, so I almost positive it is possible to travel within a local area as long as there are jobs available! I thought all companies provided private housing, although some may put you up in an extended-stay type of arrangement, but I have been told this is generally with smaller companies and/or shorter length assignments. In regards to traveling with your BF, just make sure your recruiter knows this information up front - that should not present a problem though I don't think - people are able to travel with family and pets. I have taken housing for all of my assignments to avoid the hassle of finding a place and setting up amenities, not sure if taking the housing vs. receiving a stipend makes a difference, but I think it would. Again your recruiter would be able to give you all the details regarding that.

I live in the Maryland va area....by living here you get the compact license which lets you travel to 24 states if that is what you wish to do. There is a local travel agency that staffs like 33 hospitals around the beltway here and they do per diem where you get paid daily, or they have contracts....when I worked for them many years ago they paid 45/hr but no housing....the name of that company is progressive. They also have a travel division, and they may pay for you to get that dc license. A super excellent hospital here to work for is Inova fairfax they have an amazing heart hospital...check out the web page and good luck with your move!
