Danville, Illinois

Published

Hi Everyone!

I'm going to start going to Lakeview College of Nursing in Danville starting in August and I was wondering if anyone can let me know what the public transportation system is like. I'm coming all the way from California and I've never been to Illinois so not sure if I really need to bring a car or not! If anyone has any tips on what to bring (clothes, etc) any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks!

HI

I don't know where Danville is but I am from Chicago and I can tell you there is a huge climate difference from Cali to Chicago. IN August it sometimes gets a bit chilly. Since Sept will be around the corner you may need a couple of sweaters. Good luck

I just wanted to say hello :) I will be in your class!!! Hope you are excited like me.

The public transportation is pretty bad. I live however 40-45 miles away but when I have visited I see very few buses.... I definetly would bring a vehicle. Danville also is not that safe of a town and with the classes we have on the weekends once a month and the lab we have on Thursday nights, I would not advise ANYONE to be waiting to be picked up on a bus, especially next to the school. I am sure though you will find buddies to carpool here once you get here so if you really don't need a vehicle, you can always leave it sitting somewhere so you don't have to waste money for gasoline. It is great to hear of other people starting at Lakeview. The girl that will be living with me is from Seattle, Wa and it's great to know everyone is from different places/backgrounds that seem to be attending school at Lakeview.

Safe trip down :)

Hi, I am a student at Lakeview but I attend the Eastern campus. I'm not sure about the public transportation set up of Danville but I would recommend bringing a car anyway because your clinical sites might be in places that you will have to drive to and they are not always close places. You will need to bring sweaters and heavy coats because the winters in Illinois can get pretty fierce. Good luck!

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for advice! I think I will definitely be bringing my car with me! And I'll make sure to bring my winter clothes! I'm excited to have a "real" winter this year-and hopefully see some snow!

lynz06-I'm excited to hear that you're in my class! See you in class!

Your welcome.... The poster after me was correct too. They also can send any of us in class to Champaign from Danville for clinicals. If you remember a mailing that you were sent and asked to reply to where you would be living and if you would like to have clinicals in Danville... But if you are part of the Champaign gang for clinicals, that is about 30-40 miles away. I live right now 10-15 miles from Champaign-Urbana and told them it would be silly since I was moving to Danville to school to drive back to where I live now for clinicals. But then again, I am sure there will be carpools to Champaign since Gas prices are on the rise. Also, once you are at the hospitals, I believe they will have us parking where the faculty too and its called the "fair grounds" They have shuttles that come pick you up from that area to bring you up to the hospital and also take you back.

Our weather in this area in Winter time is either hit or miss. We go some years with hardly any snow or some we have blizzards. We had a few of those this past year. Also sometimes the temperatures don't really go down below freezing until January. Now thats our area in East Central IL. If you need anything else you had in mind just let me know :) I have lived here all my life in small towns and know my way in and out of this area. I have to help out my roomate too :) She is coming from Seattle. I never realized until a few months back of how many people actually come here that are not from IL.

Look forward to meeting with you as well!

Yes you need a car... We have the city bus and some different cab services. Honestly, you dont want to ride in either one now days.

newnursingstudent: Which clinical site did you end up getting and what day do you go? I am at the Illiana VA on Tuesdays.

Which college do you go to? I am going to Dacc. My clinicals are on Thursdays. Not sure where, but I work at the Va as a Cna, so if you have any questions, let me know

Thanks a lot :)

I live in Tolono right now with my folks I have lived here in small towns all my life in IL always less than 3,000.

I will be moving here in the next couple weeks to my house and I have a roomate that is coming from Seattle, Wa. It will be great to share our experiences of the different locations because she will be at Provena on Tuesdays while I am at the Illiana Va hospital. We both are starting at Lakeview Aug. 25th.

How do you like it there at the VA hospital?

First off, I welcome you to Danville. I would like to comment on the type of clothes you may need for living in central Illinois/Indiana; bring everything you have. I have gone outside in December in shorts and then a week later I have to put on my serious arctic gear and brave a blizzard. The summers are hot and usually very humid. It may only be 85 degrees outside, but with little wind and high humidity it may feel like 100 degrees. So I have to say if you can find living quarters with air conditioning I would reccommend you do so. It is difficult to study sweating all over your med-surg book. Let me just touch on the public transportation of Danville; It is usually on time and cheap to utilize. If you need to be at a specific place and time I would depend more on a car. Taxi's cost more than their worth. I personnally will be touring around town on my trek 7200 bike if I can find some good waterproof saddle bags to protect my textbooks. Jackson st. is a N-S bike route in town, and it is easy to get to Lakeview school of Nursing from Jackson. Personnally I would take English West to Logan. If you check out mapquest you will see what I mean. Just so you know Danville is filled with ethnicity. There is white, black, asian, Indian (dot no feather), hispanic..etc. Danville has a large elderly population, and good number of people who depend on public aid. Danville was a highly industrial town that has succumed to the movement of manufacturing to places of cheaper labor and materials. I am not a student of Lakeveiw but of Danville Area Community College which has a very aggresive Nursing program for LPN and two year RN. I know Danville/Vermilion County in and out. Welcome to Danville.
