Dallas area?

Published

I live near Dallas and am interested in hearing from other nursing students or grads of distance learning programs.... or nursing students in "real" schools in the area, so we can compare notes, share thoughts, be supportive, etc., etc.

I am looking to graduate in 6 months.

Thanks!

I also live in the Dallas area. I am presently attending school (BSN program) through Excelsior University (Alsbany, NY) through their distance learning program with a graduation date of May 04. I also obtained my ADN through them in 1992. I think that the program is great as long as you are self motivated and I am very much so. I did not utilize any of the study help companies such as RUE etc. I am instead learning and doing on my own and it is really inexpensive that way!!! Upon completion of this program I will be on the way toward completing my Nurse Practitioner. I am not sure where....possibly Vanderbilt University (Nashville, TN) as they have a good distance learn program which is only one year and I have friends who have attended there.

I did distance learning for my ADN here in OKC not too far from the Big D. I enjoyed the freedom of doing my assignments online and the realitive freedom of clinicals with my fellow classmates which Paramedics and LPNs we all started in 3rd semester D/T prior experience.

Good Luck with everything

I'm a student practical nurse in kansas. My hubby would like to eventually move to a warmer climate due to health problems. What is it like there?

Also, how does an LPN from KS become an LVN in TX? And what is the pay like for beginning LVNs in that area?

Hi, Betty--

I'm not real certain what the pay is for LVN's in Texas--it's a big state and a mix of huge metro and so rural it looks like Kansas! (LOL)

My study buddy is an LVN in a long term acute care facility--she and others on this site (have you checked the LVN forum?) would probably be helpful. You might also look at the classified ads in the Dallas Morning News. That might give you some idea of the prevailing wages and job opportunities around here...

As to getting licensed here, my understanding is that you just apply to the Board of Nursing in Texas. An RN I knew a couple of years ago got her TX license (coming from OK) in less than 2 weeks. Of course you have to provide a copy of your current license and maybe some proof of your education. Or, when you graduate, you may be able to just come on down and take the test here.

Check with the Kansas state office that licenses LVN's (your instructors will know which one that is), and see if Kansas and Texas have reciprocity (means they see each other's LVN's as qualifying for licensure in their own state). That's also a good place to find out who to contact in Texas for licensing.

Good luck in your studies, and I hope you come--we need help!

Merry Christmas!

Hello,

I was just wondering how do you obtain a ADN and do clinicals taking a distance learning course? Also, how long does it take and what are the pre-reqs?

THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!!:)
