Hey everyone, I just wanted to start this thread in case some students who are beginning the nursing program at Cypress College (CA) this fall wanted to get to know one another. I applied Fall 2010 and was an alternate this Spring 2011. I've already done my background check, TEAS test and the medical check-up so if anyone has questions regarding these I'd be happy to help :)
Hope to hear from some of you!

I got an alternate letter today and I need to go through all the process. I don't know if I will get in or not.
As an alternate, you might not want to get everything done first. They give you a little extra time if you are admitted, because you can't possibly get everything done on the fly. I was accepted and I still didn't have my papers in on time lol, mainly because I needed a chest x ray since I was vaccinated for TB, lol.
As for alternates, they took in A TON of them for our semester, so you have a great chance!
I hope so guavaturtle. I just cross my fingers, thank you. Are you in your second semester. I will let you know, if I happen to get in.
Assuming all goes well, I'll be in second semester come fall haha! Best of luck!

Hello. I got in Spring 2011, but deferred to Fall 2011. I took the TEAS in December so I am assuming I do not have to take it again. I just have a question on the textbooks. Which ones are the crucial ones to get for the first and second semesters? I know Taylor is one and the I already have the Davis Drug Guide. I found the Taylor clinical videos for free on an online library. I am wondering if there are any other items I should get. Any info would be helpful. Thanks
So good to hear from you Guava! I'm glad you are doing well in your first semester - this is a good sign that it is doable :)
As an alternate I actually went ahead and did everything before the mandatory meeting when they told the alternates NOT to do everything haha. I called Darlene and she said that the only thing I have to redo is the background check. So N2Biology - you do not have to retake your TEAS. I believe that this grade is good for a few years at least.
As for books - If you go to the family night (whenever that is) the students are really helpful when it comes to insider info on things like books and uniforms. Pull a student aside and drill them. I pulled a nice 3rd semester aside and she gave me TONS of info they don't get into in the meetings. A lot of students opt to get all of the books including the "optional" books because they thing they are helpful but I think that you can definitely get by on just the required ones.
If money is an issue with the optional books maybe you can team up with another student and go half and half on the optional books and then share them.
I'm looking forward to meeting you all :)

I'm moving to California from Missouri to attend Cypress College this fall :) While I'm not taking their nursing program, I am taking pre-requisites for CSU Long Beach's nursing program so that I can get my Bachelor's. I would bridge over from an ASN, but I've already completed several difficult dual-credit classes that wouldn't apply to an Associate's degree.
Hey again ncamp! Well it's always awesome to get stuff out of the way, then you can sit back and watch other people freak out about stuff, that's always fun!
The first semester so far is really easy, but I've heard from further semesters that it gets a little wild and crazy, so that will be absolutely delightful, lol.
Feel free to ask me any questions and grill away! I have no problem with that! As for books, stick to the Taylor and Iggy, that's really all you need for class. For clinicals, you need the Nursing Diagnosis Book (ackley) and a drug book (davis). However, i bought a book called "fundamentals for success" along with Saunders NCLEX review and that's been extremely helpful!
Just try to go into the program and not let anybody freak you out. And don't freak yourself out either. Don't compare with other people. The only person that should be standards for yourself...is yourself. Best of luck!
