Cynical? Realistic? or both?

I have noticed that in many many threads at least one person, and usually more are being called "cynical" or "jaded". This one is for the experienced RN's out there, those of us who have been around the block a few times....

are we cynical? I call it being realistic. People are stupid (for the most part :chuckle ) people do stupid things, and, basically, sh*@ happens...

sometimes I honestly think I have seen it all but then, the human race always does something to remind me that I havent. :uhoh3:

What do you guys think? I am interested in hearing some feed back.

Specializes in ER, ICU, L&D, OR.

I was skydiving this summer and twisted my ankle on landing, huge swelling and bruise immediately. My friends tried to take me to the ER, but I made them take me home.

After 2 days of rest and ice, it felt better, and on with my life, fortunately it was a weekend and the golf tournaments were on TV

I may need to change that to my tag line! Reminds me of a friend who said her family motto was..."we may not always be right, but we're sure". I always liked that one too!

if we weren't cynical and realistic we probably wouldn't last long in this profession. a dark sense of humor helps, also. you can't see everything we see, put up with the situations we put up with, and come out on the other side without at least a somewhat cynical view on the majority of the human race. jmo

perfect answer! my sentiments exactly. :)

Yes were cynical, I tell you what I have worked er since I was an LPN. I have worked in the same er since then and I will probabley always work in the er at the same place. Our ER is a level one trauma center. I cant seem to help the real emergencies because im to busy taking care of a crack whose fake kidney stone is giving him/her pain so they can get some morphine or demerol and get more addicted to drugs. Wow good for us weve some how manage to always take care of the stupid cases and forget about the legite patients who are experiencing a real crisis. I used to love working er but Im thinking about taking a hiatus to med-surg or ICU.

So yes after taking care of the dopies and gang bangers and fakers yes were cynical we cant help but be cynical.

Never give up.:)
