CV as a newly qualified. help

Published

Hello everybody

hope everybody is well? :)

Currently I'm working in a position I am not really happy with and would like to leave. The thing is just that I have been a qualified nurse only since sept 2007 (Qualified in germany) The employment situation for nurses in germany is quite difficult and I have been unemployed for 6 months until I started my first job in nursing here in Ireland in a nursing home in early april (therefore 3 months nursing home experience). I never wanted to work in a nursing home but my agency put me in there due to my lack of work experience and told me to collect 6-12 months work experience there first and then it will be easier to find hospital work but I am quite unhappy there.

Anyway I am now trying to update my CV and I find it very difficult.

I want to put a summary at the top of the cv that might cause employers to disregard my lack of experience and I would like to say that i am able to work independently, very eager to collect hospital experience (I feel that in a nursing home i dont really learn much, but rather forget). I so much want to get into a hospital job but almost all job advertisements ask for 1-2 years work experience (how much did i learn to hate this word WORK EXPERIENCE:uhoh21::no::argue:)

I also want to put the duties I performed in the nursing home. My english is very fluent and never had any language difficulties on my job (even though i was trained in german language) , its just that I am not used to write english CVs in professional language.

so far i put this into the section duties in my nursing home position.

Duties / Responsibilities:

- Autonomously providing care for 30 residents per shift

- Supervising and delegating duties to Care Assistants

- Medication administration and observing residents on response to medications and possible side effects

- Observing and monitoring changes in condition and wellbeing of residents and providing adapted nursing interventions.

additionally to this im dealing with relatives and their concerns, with prefinal nursing home residents, Diabetic patients, alzheimer patients, writing the documentation and so on. its just so hard to put all this into words.

Can anybody give me advice?

Thanks a lot!

can anybody please help me?

I dont have any good advice but I am curious and hope someone else does. Good luck!

Hi there,

I wouldn't worry too much about your lack of experience, it's not that important. Willigness to learn, be part of a team and a solid portfolio is. 9 times out of 10 you get the job if they think you can 'fit in' with the team (tips from several senior sisters).

If you go on this site

https://www.jobs.nhs.uk/cgi-bin/login_applicant.cgi

and login an application, it would give you an idea on how to lay your CV.

Be honest with them, nursing home just isn't your cup of tea because....

Good luck and be positive, I suspect part of your 'problem' is not finding a job in Germany and the new culture, erase all that and start afresh. It's not easy, I appreciate this, but you'll be ok.

hi there, cv's are always difficult to write but before you spend lots of time on it take a look at the nhs jobs site as many of the employers only accept online applications. the amount of cv's i get are now very low.

when you do write your cv try to keep it under 2 pages long, it keeps interest without driving the shortlist panel to boredom

keep it to the point.

with mine i have started with a personal statement.

something like

i am an enthusiatstic and hardworking qualified nurse. i am keen to learn and enjoy challenges. i am adaptable and after gaining expereince working within ireland community care am keen to progress and develop within a new environment. ([color=gray]obviously the wording may not be right for you but i am sure you get the picture. put something about the speciality you have applied for such as ................... i had a keen interest in surgical / medical / care of the elderly / paediatric nursing during my training and would like to progress further within this area)

after the personal statement i usually list educational and professional history, so put your school qualifications and professional qualifications with dates and institutions studied

then employment history, as you have stated yours is quite short but if you worked before nursing school you can add it here.

keep the stuff in the employment history short and bullet points so

date: employer: position

eg

november 2007 - april 2008 caring community care home, ireland qualified nurse (band 5)

after that i put bullet points, take it from your job description for the duties that you have in there. if there is a short statement of the role then maybe put it before the bullet points but don't make it too long.

after employment history i have personal interest, when shortlisting i like to see that people have a life outside work and it is something that can personalise the interview.

then references, list 2 references one of them should be your current employer.

hope this helps, i am more than happy to help further if you want

hello everybody,

thanks very much for your replies. I tried to PM some of you but this website told me I couldnt...

i now wrote my cv and it looks like this (i took out personal informations I dont want the public to see and replaced them with ....)

any suggestions? (this site messed up the format. in its original form the CV looks very tidy) its now just about the contents. would u add anything? write something differently? leave something out?

Summary

I am an enthusiatstic and hardworking qualified nurse who is keen to learn and enjoys challenges. I am adaptable and after gaining valuable experience working within Ireland's community care I wish to progress and develop within an acute hospital environment here in Ireland. Already during my practical training I learnt to work with increasing independence towards my final year which has been a great factor that today I am able to work both collaboratively with the team as well as maintaining a high standard of care working independently.
