Current Med/Surge Nurse being bumped to Snif unit for nurse with more seniority???

Published

Hi,

I am a current CA RN and I was told last week that a nurse from another unit in our hospital (her unit is shutting down) is going to be "bumping" me and taking my full time 80 hour position. IS THIS LEGAL? They say the good news is that I will still have a job as they are offering me a 56 hour (every two weeks) position on a different unit (a SNIF); however, this just does not seem right to me. Is there any protection for me, as I am part of the CA nursing union.

Has anyone heard of this happening before? This is all just so bizarre to me.

Thanks!

If you are at a union facility you can be bumped. If it is non union then you maybe getting the shaft.

Since you say the facility is union, perfectly within grounds. That is what unions are for. If you do not feel they are being truthful with you, you might want to ask for some proof that this other person has seniority on you, but she most likely does. Not much you can do in that case. Probably should look for part time work with an agency to make up the lost hours.

I am not sure about that. I'm part of the NNU (formerly CNA) and when I got hired, I signed a contract with 36 hours a week on my stated hours. Do you know what your contract says? A higher up person can always bump you, but usually they would have to maintain the hours guaranteed in your particular contract. I would contact a union rep. They would be the only one who would know for sure.
