I am over half way through my EC program and JUST found out about the trouble in CAli with EC. :banghead: Does anyone know what CURRENT info is? Can we simply not work there no matter what? I finished 3 1/2 semesters of a traditional 4 semester RN program in NY so have had plenty of clinical time.

The reason this is so distressing to me, is moving back home to Ca was going to be my reward (not to mention my family) for graduating!

Any info would help, much thanks,

Angel

Unless someone has experience with this situation, you will have to contact the Board directly with your question. I just researched the website. It gives the info regarding the court decision regarding Excelsior and states that all applicants must meet the State of CA requirements. In another paper (on student clinical supervision) it states that the clinical requirement is 810 hours. There is no specific reference to obtaining a license elsewhere and endorsing into CA except in a section on unauthorized nursing programs operating in CA. They specifically state that if a person gets an RN license from another state after getting credentials from an unauthorized nursing program, that they can not get a CA nursing license. I would take this to mean that getting a license from another state with an EC education will not allow one to endorse that license into CA. If it were me, I would contact the BRN and get this info from the horse's mouth. From your description of how far you went in your NY nursing program, you may have 810 hours of clinicals. If you look on the RN application, they have a spot for non-graduates to apply for licensure. You may qualify under these terms, so I would definitely contact the board and see if your NY nursing program gave you enough hours. Worth a try. Good luck.

That last little tidbit of info is wonderful!! Thanks! I did get a hold of the CA BON but the person I needed to speak to wasn't there. I will absolutely keep going for it! If not, there are VA hospitals and NASA and Edwards AFB near where I'm going, someone might like to have me! I know I can work for the fed/govt places. Thanks so much!

Would working for a federal prison qualify?

From what I understand, anything where the hiring board is federal and not state is ok, because it isn't governed by the state of Ca.

I did talk to a woman at the board finally. She said she has never licensed someone in my shoes who was an EC grad. I am an aide/psych tech, not an LPN. She told me based on my education that she might consider it if I had a year RN experience in another state. Again, there don't seem to be any really CUT AND DRIED rules. She didn't mention specific number of hours (like the 810 for their clinical requirements) or anything. I think I'll just work here for a while and then go home, it's too crazy. Arizona is looking better every day!!!:typing

In my case I can challenge the LVN and then do the 30 unit LVN-RN out there, but I don't feel like redoing school a THIRD time... lol! That is one option tho. If you are looking to RN from an LVN in Cali, that is one way to go. But then your RN will not transfer OUT to other states.

My poor husband is ripping out his hair right now...... he's wondering, like all of us, why if there's such a terrible shortage of nurses they make it so difficult. If we can do the clinical requirements and keep a sterile field, etc., and then pass the NCLEX and show our knowlege and critical thinking skills, you think they'd be flipping cartwheels to get help.

I love CA, I REALLY want to go home. But if they don't want me there as a nurse, then there are plenty of places who want to take a great new grad nurse who loves what she does.

EC is fabulous!!! Losing out on my RN 8 weeks before graduation almost floored me, and it has given me a reason to go on!!

Curious to hear what the lady at the Board had to say about your nearly completed RN program from NY. You should already have more than the required amount of RN education in that program. It was a BSN program?

I just realized what your name CALI Otter is... I love otters!! MISS THEM! lol I went to Morrow bay once, drove up the coast... oh my gosh, so pretty. But I digress....

Anyway, I never thought to ask her about that, I'll have to call her again. I know it says that on the RN ap, but for some reason I thought that was only for CA student nurses?? Do you think it would work for me?

All they can do is say no, or not no, but heck no. I saw a golden opportunity for you, RN license from previous schooling and ASN from EC. Only problem, like the 30 unit option RN, license only good in state of CA. Yeah, I love to watch the little critters. Morro Bay is close to SLO, where I was a tadpole. Used to go to Monterey Bay to watch the otters.
