Curious about men in NICUs

Published

 HI everyone. I am a male student in my second year of an associates RN program. Ever since my OB rotation, I have had a great interest in neonates. I was the only student who would walk to the special care nursery every clinical day just to observe. My questions are: Do many men work in NICUs, and is there ever problems with men in the units as employees? I guess you don't see many guys doing it because they have no interest, but can a guy be successful in a NICU?

We have one guy....he is the balance to 100 women's estrogen surges :lol We love him to death...he is a real card. The dads and gramps all love him :) The only moms that don't care for him are the Muslims...they prefer women due to their beliefs..and he is cool with that :)

Hi! One of our night shift charge nurses is a guy and is easily one of the most well liked and well respected RN's in our unit. It adds another element to have guys in the unit nad makes what can be a long 12 hours a little more fun. I agree that fathers really like him and he is someone they can relate to. Most of our RT's are men too, so he's not short on male company. It takes a speial person to work NICU. I say if that person is you go for it!

when my daughter was in NICU (8 years ago) the best nurse in there was a big biker looking guy bald with tattoos all over and alot of peircings. in fact the best nurses they had in the whole nicu were guys i have been in alot of nicu's (not working yet just for family) and i have found that guys in there are mostly the better ones however there are always exceptions

Male or female, we all became nurses because we care and want to give the best care possible to our patients and that goes for the smallest ones as well. Follow your heart and do what you want to do. I've worked with some of the best nurses in both NICU and Well Baby who were male.

I have worked in NICU's where I was the only male and currently work in one with 9 males. Makes no difference to me I would never work anywhere else. I learned as a student that if I worked adults I would get every 300+ lb. Pt. that came through the door. I never have that problem now!
