Discussion related to the Summer 2014 start of Cal State LA's ABSN/ELMN program.

Guys!!! I got an interview!! :)

Good luck to everyone still waiting!!

lgripe so happy for you!!!!!

I just got the email this morning!!! I am invited to interview!!!!!!! EEK. So relieved.

Thanks for all the well wishes! I think I did pretty well! We are not allow to name names apparently, but I interviewed with the contact person that I have been e-mailing with regarding the program for the past year. It was VERY relaxed and conversational. I'm not really allowed to go into detail about the contents of the interview, but there are some scenario questions and general questions that allow the interviewer to determine your personality.

I think that's the whole reason they actually interview. The cohorts they accept are SMALL-I'm talking maximum 30 students. They really want to make sure that each student will not only survive the program but will also be a great team player and part of the general support system for the entire cohort.

And yes, there is a writing sample. This is also used, I think, to just determine general academic ability and raw intellect. I was told I might not know until the end of March because interviews will be continuing until then.

Good luck everyone.... be calm, be yourself, remember to breath!!

Yes- they are most definitely looking to make a cohort who will work well together and from my experience this year they do a damned good job at it. That being said- they mix it up well - we are a variety of ages, races, backgrounds, etc... key ingredients: compassionate, hard working, flexible, responsible, friendly, focused, patient, good critical thinking skills.

Looking forward to meeting those of you who get in on orientation day!

Last note- for those who do get in and who happen to be parents; there are two of us in this last cohort and we are very available to offer support re: balancing school and parenting. Its hard but it CAN be done!

@superfryk thank you so much for all your advice! I was wondering if you could please shed some light on the following: Are students allowed to work during the Masters portion? And if so, how many actually do? Is it normal for students to work FT during the Masters portion? Also, have you heard anything about the job hunting post graduation? Specifically, do all/most students get NP jobs or do they first have to start as RNs (maybe due to lack of experience) and work their way up? Thank you in advance for your insight!

I know this question wasn't directed at me but I may have an answer! I was told in the interview that it is expected and recommended that students work as RNs after passing the NCLEX. It is very hard to NPs to get jobs without prior RN experience, so they suggest working full-time and doing the rest of the program full-time as well (MSN portion). Some students even take leave of absences to get some experience! I was told that was also allowed.

Good to know! Thank you!! So if the program only runs once a year, it would have to be a year long absence? Hmm I hope the market magically gets better by the time we're applying! Good luck to everyone that has interviews coming up this week!

Hey guys! Just wanted to let you know that I emailed with the coordinator today about interview details and asked her about applying to the university. She said only those who are accepted/plan on attending will need to apply to the university. So all we need to focus on at this point is our interviews!

Did anyone submit a FAFSA? If you did, did you apply under 2nd bachelor degree or graduate? I got an email from M last night reminding to apply and I'm not sure if it was a mass reminder or I applied under the wrong one and they don't have it. Thanks!

I received the email too - think it is a reminder for everyone. I submitted under graduate since I listed 3 schools - 2 of which are masters programs. I think you can modify later if needed.

Okay perfect! Thank you!
