Hello,
I thought I'd make this thread for the new application group... even though it's a bit late since we have to all apply soon!
Anyway! I want to apply for the Fall 2012 term but I had some questions. I am an current CSULA student that transferred to CSULA in Fall 2010. I'm a Psychology major but am applying for Fall 2012 Nursing. I haven't taken my TEAS yet, but I'll be taking that on Friday (!!), so I'm very nervous about that.
That said, this is my first question:
I've been getting mixed info from different people. When I visited the Academic Advising Office last Spring (2011), the adviser told me that as long as I did not graduate from CSULA BEFORE I graduated, I could apply to the SON as a BSN applicant. I called SON to see if I could even apply for the ELM program and they told me that as far as they knew, I could not because I did not have my Bachelor's Degree yet.
So right now, I have approximately 2 quarters left in order to finish my Psychology major, approximately 6~8 classes. Ideally, I could finish by Spring 2012, but depending on my other workloads, I could push it back to Fall 2012. The problem is that I'm not allowed to graduate if I want to go into the basic program so I can't apply for graduation just yet. But IF I don't get into the BSN program, then I have to wait another two quarters after May or June or whenever they send out acceptances in order to officially graduate.
So I went to go and talk to my adviser about graduation and if I should even bother applying for Spring 2012 graduation and she tells me that no, I'm not allowed to apply for a BSN but I can go for the ELM program.
Does anyone know which is true? The CSULA advisers tell me that I can't apply for the Basic program but I can apply for ELM while the SON says that I can't apply for ELM because I don't have my Bachelor's degree yet and I should apply for the BSN program. Other graduate schools like APU and UCLA have also told me the same thing - without a Bachelor's, I cannot get apply for the ELM program at their school.
Thank you~
@ spiffy
The person goes to CSULA.
Still, it shouldn't matter since CSULA treats all its transfers just as if they were the same as the students who already come here. The real way they break the ties with points is they go into the amount of points you received from each category. For example if one person obtained most of their points from their prereqs and not enough from the TEAS they will choose the person who obtained a good score in both the teas and the prereqs. People with high scores in both the prereq area and the TEAS area who did not volunteer will get in with 22 points as opposed to someone who had volunteer experience who did bad on the TEAS but got 22 points.
But thats just an example which probably relates to more of the people with 19s (since that was the waitlist cut off for last year) People with 22 points should be getting in!
and probably will get in tomorrow!!
Yea I calculated correctly. 4.0 gpa for prereq. 3.9 for cum gpaI have never retaken a course either
Make sure you counted the National Percentile rank for English/Reading sections and not individual adjusted score.
@sami - I got 90+ percentile in both english/reading on teas. 3.66 pre-req gpa and 3.0 for cumulative gpa. I also volunteered 100+ hrs. I didn't get letter. Explain this if you can please in terms of tie-breaking because obviously someone with the same amount of points as me got in and I didn't. ..
Hi again everyone! Just so y'all would know, I got in with 23 or 24 points. Congratulations to everyone who got their letters already! To those of you who haven't yet, don't lose hope! The people who got acceptance letters most likely got accepted to other schools too, so spots should open up should they decide to attend another school! I look forward to meeting everyone in September. :)
@sami....so i am screwed? i wonder if my job would give me the edge? doubt it. though.
to those who didn't get an email yet. dont lose hope. you probably have miscalculated your scores. I am kinda glad i found out about my dropped score months ago vs now.
BTW if you are a transfer, they only count certain classes toward your overall GPA. I calculated ALL transferable courses converting quarter to semester units and got above a 3.26. They told me they calculated barely a 3.0
you never know.
Yea but im trying to figure out who is theoretically supposed to get an acceptance email, based on kosmic's score of 22, but did not. Just being a desperate realist trying to figure out if there is true hope or false hope : )
ya i dont know how they are doing it. maybe alphabetically?
all i know is that your fine, and will get your email tomorrow or something.
@ Sami
Should that hold true, I can't seem to grasp why so much emphasis is placed on 1 test while prerequisite gpa is based on numerous classes consisting of many tests, time, effort, sweat, and sometimes blood(I cut myself dissecting a cat). Doing good on 1 test just requires enough time to prepare and anyone can pass with good scores. IMO prerequisite classes should carry more weight. But I guess my opinion doesnt really matter as everyone has one.
@buddy
Yea I calculated whichever one is the correct one, I quadruple checked by referencing their guidelines and then calculating my score. I posted it in one of the earlier pages of this thread.
not much
pre req: 3.59: 6 points
overall: 3.0 or 3.1 : 2 points (i think they calculated wrong but w/e) it may have raised when I sent in winter grades, doubt it though
TEAS:.......sorry had to look it up. Reading was national %-tile: 91: 5 points
English was national %-tile 78: 3 points
CNA job at hospital 3 points
What that tally me up to............. a crap-score of .....19
Well the evaluater that broke the news to me said tie breakers are mostly like if you have the co-reqs done. Like if are lucky enough to attend CSULA or a school that offers a decent nutrition class that transfers or has completed intro to sociology. that is a tie breaker. I just complete intro to socio the beginning of this month. I probably should have sent the grades in. I am going to (I got a C, because it was online and I slacked! And it is my last 'pre nursing' class)
Oh well.
I guess its ADN for me!

For those of you who calculated above a 22 and wasn't accepted, one of two things could have happened: 1) Your letter hasn't come yet or 2) You calculated wrong. Keep in mind that only SIX courses are calculated into your pre-req GPA: 1) Anatomy 2) Physiology 3) Psychology 4) Chemistry 5) English 6) Critical Thinking.
*Microbiology and Speech do NOT count towards your PRE-REQ GPA.
Repeated pre-req course grades will only be calculated into pre-req GPA only if the first attempt was a grade of a C- or lower. There is no expiration for science courses.
In addition, if you sent in AP Scores, then that subject will be excluded from PRE-REQ GPA. For example, if you sent in English AP Scores that you took from High School, then your Pre-Req GPA will be waived and calculated out of 5 subjects and not 6 (excluding English).
Also, double check to verify that your cumulative GPA is calculated correctly as not ALL courses are CSU transferable, which then should be excluded when calculating GPA.
