I am wondering if anyone knows how it works to take nursing courses in the summer. Advisement said summer courses are available, but aren't the semesters arranged so certain classes are taken together?

This is how it works for people who start in the Spring. In spring semester you take pharm and 101 and fall you are supposed to take mental health and med surg...well for full time students they give you an option of putting your name on a list to take mental health over the summer with the part time students. The students are chosen by random lottery from that list and they picked 6 students, I thankfully was one of those 6 and I'm sooo glad I got picked.
So then in the following fall you take only Med Surg?
That is correct...that's what I'm taking right now, my one and only class and it's nice to just have to focus on the one class.
Thanks so much! I wish I could do that but I need to remain full-time to get my financial aid.

hey.. i was just wondering, does anyone know if they offer 3rd semester courses in the summer? i'm in 2nd semester this spring & i wanted to go to school in the summer so i don't waste time.. thanks..
I'm not sure, if they do you will hear something towards the end of the semester, and if you are full time then if they offer it to you it'll only be limited spaces due to the part time people so that's why they pick the people via random lottery. It doesn't mean you get to graduate sooner, it just spreads out your work load which is nice. Actually I just looked up both the part-time tracks (those that start in fall vs. spring) and looks like one of the groups takes peds over the summer so you may get the option to put your name on a list to be randomly chosen for it.

Andy is spot on. If you are already in the nursing program full time and wish to take a class over the summer it is done by lottery for the few slots they "may" have open. I think it also depends on the success of the part time class during the semester before that determines availability. With that said, the class starting this Spring part time will be taking either 115 or 243 over the summer (not sure) and the part time class that started in the Fall of 09 will be taking Peds. As Andy said though, it won't allow you to graduate faster, it just allows you to take one of the 2 classes you would normally take in the next semester.
oh.. okay, thank you so much for all the information. :) i just really wanted to go to school in the summer so i don't waste any time.. although i am aware that i won't graduate any sooner than i'm supposed to, at least i'll be able to be in school in the summer & not feel like i'm wasting time.. & it'll make fall 2010 easier for me.. thank you so much. :) i start 2nd semester next week & i'm soo nervous.. but i'm just relieved to make it to 2nd semester.. do you guys know if it's true that it's easier than 1st?
Yes it would make fall easier but don't get too excited yet, it's random lottery, they were offering mental health over the summer and they only had 6 places and many people put their name down to be picked. I was lucky that I got picked. So good luck to you, its certainly worth a shot. I just got down with 2nd semester. Like I said i took mental health over the summer and did med-surg by itself in the fall. So yeah it was easier then first in that sense but I the content of the material is harder then first semester. I think people just say its easier because by the time you've gotten to second you know what to expect, you know what works for you in terms of study and how to manage your time etc.
oh, well good luck to you this semester! i heard 3rd semester was fun.. :) thanks for all the info.. you're such a big help. thank you!
