CSCC worth the wait?

U.S.A. Ohio

Hey everyone! I have been struggling a bit lately with deciding which school to go to. I took the HESI last week and was accepted into Hondros. After speaking with the nurses I work with and reading topics on here, I became scared and realized that Hondros probably wasn't the school for me! Now I am seriously considering CSCC. I have heard a lot of great things about their nursing program and hardly any bad. The only downfall is the wait time. I just want to make sure that it is completely worth the wait. I am not in any hurry because I realized that I could get into a school such as Hondros or Chamberlain this fall, but I would much rather wait and get a great education instead of rushing into something I may regret. So will I definitely be able to get into the CSCC nursing program, it's just a matter of when? Also, have you all heard it's a good program?

Thanks for any responses in advance!

The CSCC is very well respected and has a reputation for turning out good nurses. It is also considerably less expensive than either Hondros ( Which has a much less stellar reputation) or Chamberlain.

CSCC will be $122.00 per semester hour effective with the fall 2012 semester.

Something else to think about:

Credits from CSCC will transfer easily to just about any RN to BSN / MSN program. Credits from most for profit schools ( Hondros, Fortis, Chamberlain etc. ) do NOT always transfer.

CSCCs LPN program is also well respected, has less of a waiting list, ( At least it used to..) and would get you into the nursing work force sooner. Then you will have even more options for obtaining your RN.

Hope this helps!

Thanks, that does help so much! I am definitely going with CSCC and I have an appointment with an academic advisor this month :) thanks again!

I'm a 5th quarter student at CSCC. The program is a disorganized mess and the faculty could care less about students. However, I'm getting good grades, good clinical feedback, and at the end I'll be a RN with no debt. PM me if you have any questions! :)

CSCC=Clark State, I'm assuming. I'm there now, Spring Quarter of the first year.

Don't be intimidated by the waiting list; as long as you finish up your pre-req's, specifically A&P, you shouldn't wait more than two years. It may even be sooner than that, as they are currently running two programs per year instead of one now.

It is a bit disorganized now, due to the semester transition, the extra first-year class, and losing a couple instructors, but I'm not having a problem getting through. The instructors (for the most part) are very good, knowledgable, and get you on the right track for both NCLEX and your RN career. There is alot of complaining by the students, but already working in the health-care field I chalk it up mostly to immaturity and unrealistic expectations of what they'll face once they're out in the field.

Columbus State is absolutely disorganized right now, especially the hybrid program. It is an incredibly frustrating program to be in, and you have to be prepared to deal with changes to everything and just plain not knowing what's going on.

Even with all of that, however, it has a stellar reputation in the community and the amount of work you put in does make you prepared to be a nurse. I would still rather be here than Hondros. If you don't want to wait, you can also do Mt. Carmel for BSN or COTC (has a shorter wait time, but you need to get your STNA and drive out to newark, eek!).

Do you guys think any of the disorganization that was mentioned has anything to do with the switch to semesters situation? I cant seem to get an appt with an advisor as hard as I try lately to talk about what the switch will mean to the nursing program but Im still taking prereqs for like two more quarters... But maybe someone on here can give me more info?

I have an appointment with an advisor this Saturday. I'm still pretty much leaning toward CSCC, just because of the cost and it is close to me! Thanks again for all of the replies, keep them comin :)

CSCC problems go far beyond the switch to semesters. But it is still the best ADN prorgram around. Unfortunately OSU and Children's have gone to BSN only and I am sure OhioHealth and Mt Carmel will follow suit. It makes it even harder to find a job and forces us into RN-BSN programs even sooner. The program is also extremely short staffed right now. Outside of 2nd/3rd quarter skill labs, I'm still waiting to be taught something. I have had multiple clinical instructors who also precept OSU/Otterbein students and said they have to greatly lower their expectations with CSCC students because we know so little in comparison (not our fault). It's a dirt cheap education - you get what you pay for.

Hah, you get what you pay for has become our class' mantra. FL, are you in the program now??

Yes, I'm 5th quarter hybrid :)
