CSCC Nursing School Uniform

Published

Current CSCC students, I have a question. The handbook basically says "white nursing uniform - no No stretch knits, jeans, capris, sweats, scrub suits or jumpsuits." So, what exactly should I be looking for?

Also, regarding stethoscopes, do I need to get a double or single bell?

Thanks in advance for the help guys!

I know it's been a few days, but I went into the Book Store yesterday to sell back my books and took a look at the shelves. I'm not sure about the uniform information, but what I *did* see were double belled stethoscopes in the $30 price range. The only other equipment (it was a GHOST TOWN IN THERE!) were goggles. +/- $14.

Quick addition - I remember a reference to uniform NOT resembling scrubs in any way; the pants should be either elastic waist or zippered (no drawstring); tops to be zippered or snapped; shoes all leather/covered (no mesh) and socks that cover your ankle. Again, HTH.

I just passed the first semester this spring.

I had a single bell and it worked fine. My clinical instructor wanted a double bell, but most of the class didn't have one. It doesn't really make a difference. When you test blood pressure you'll use a school stethoscope that two people can hear with.

Penlight get one with the pupil size on it. We never used goggles and never had to carry them. I never used sissors but every clinical day I had to carry them so probably get a small pair.

I bought one uniform and saw no need for two. I bought one lab coat, you'll only need it for patient pickup you'll wear professional clothes under it. The patches for the uniform can be purchased at the bokstore $5 each they go on the left arm. I sewed mine on about 2" down. There is a dark green thread that matches at walmart coats and clark ART A235.

I'm a man, but they were very strict on socks. Socks can't be ankle socks. Shoes must cover the heel completely. I saw one student with a top that looked like a scrub top, but it tied in the back so they said it was okay. The rest of the girls had button tops I think.

I had my physical and shots done at the williamson co health department and it is based upon your income.

One helpful hint is get the books early and maybe watch the skills dvds over the summer.

If you're in franklin don't get the optional care plan books.

Just get lewis $80, kozier $220 should come with the skills dvds, and a drug book $20.

I got the kozier book from the pearson website. It was the cheapest I could find.

Lewis is used very little in nursing I, but is the main book in II. You'll use it for disease processes.

Kozier is the main book in I. If you read ahead I suggest the physical assessment chapter it is 80 pages.

drug book will be used to look up drugs.

I bought a dictionary and it was helpful, but the internet works too.

The class does change slightly each semester. The class was challenging. The class grade average in the fundamentals was probably a low B maybe a high C. A couple of people may have got A's but not many.

Math was easy. It was 7 quizes(140pts) and the final (80pts) for a total of 200 points. You get to drop the lowest quiz. Do well on the first quizes and you'll have less to worry about.

Clinical is pass/fail. You have skills to perform. The hardest is the physical assessment. It is three pages of memorization. Care plans are part of the clinical, but they are not too bad if you follow the instruction.

Class averages for the fundamentals tests (400 points)

1. 83%

2. 80%

3. 81%

4. 82%

5. 77%

6. 86%

final 80%

Many people dropped out. Many people had bachelors degrees. Most came out of A&P I&II with A's.

I'd highly suggest getting the co-requisites done during the summer.

Good luck.

Make sure you pass. There is no readmission to the nursing program if you fail out of nursing I.

Thanks for the information and tips! I'll be starting this fall at the Franklin campus. Reading ahead sounds like a good idea- I'll try to fit that in around Micro this summer.
