Crying, Cursing in Class and other Drama

A little bit of drama in my school this week, all test related. During one test, one woman realized her answers were all screwed up with only five minutes to go. Since she didn't have to time to fix it, she starts cursing and yelling at the teacher, who promptly threw her out.

Then, in another class, a girl starts crying because she flunked. It's always a little uncomfortable when people cry in class. But then she goes out in the hallway and complains to another teacher (who happens to be passing by) about how bad this teacher is. She did this very loudly and in front of everybody during the class break. Naturally, since she wasn't very discreet, it got back to the teacher.

While I've found both of these teachers to be pretty reasonable, I still don't blame people for being upset sometimes. But these emotional outbursts are a bit weird. Has this happened to anybody else? Or was it because there was a full moon this week or something? ;)

Whooops! Sorry, I got this post and another post on flirting students confused - disregard please.

College is really stressful! My daughter goes to College at NYU, Stern School of Business. It is so competitive! This week another NYU student committed suicide, which evidently is happening on campuses all over the country. My husband and I make sure that we call and talk to my daughter frequently and we send care packages and make sure that we get her home for holidays. (We live in California - the girl that committed suicide was a transfer student from California)

These nursing students that are stressing out may not have good support systems. The teachers need to be alert to these types of students and make sure that they have access to counseling services. Also, nursing students need to reach out to one another.

When I was in nursing school I remember crying from time to time, not in class though. I also went to the doctor for stomach pains. I threw-up on a test! Yes, right on the test. I ended up having an Upper GI because the doctor thought I had ulcers. He handed me a prescription for Valium, which I threw in the trash on the way out. I also remember a very kind nursing instructor meeting with me in her office because I seemed very sad after breaking up with my boyfriend. Nursing School was hard. I was up the earliest and home the lastest. Other University students in other majors appeared to have a lot more time to party. I was in a BSN program and we started out with 500 students my freshman year and ended with about 200 graduating.

Yet another girl cried in class yesterday. It must have been personal because our major test in this particular class was postphoned this week. Since I sit next to her, I didn't know what to do. If you stay silent, it might seem you don't care and that you're insensitive. But if you ask what's wrong, they may not want to talk about it and asking might upset them more.

I honestly don't know what to do in situations like that. Thankfully spring break is next week. Maybe everybody will get some much needed rest and chill out.

take care and hang in there!!!

obviously there is a lot of anxiety related to tests, but some people have too little self discipline react appropriately. Sorta like road rage--just can't control themselves. Worse, anxiety is contagious. I once had a student complain because she made a poor grade even though she had perfect attendance (as if she was being graded on attendance!). I question how these people will react in REAL stress situations as a nurse. Hope you are learning some stress busting techniques!
