Hi Everyone,
Can anyone help ?! I am applying for initial registration in NS to see if I am eligible to sit the CRNE this year. I did my general training in Scotland in 1986 then my mental health in 1991, have been working continuously since then. I received an email from them today saying they are now changing the way they assess IEN's to see if they are eligible to sit the exam, does anyone know what these changes are and how it affects UK trained nurses ? I'm panicking a bit now ! I'm thinking they may say I might not be eligible to sit the exam ! if this was the case would I be able to work in NS as a LPN ?
Any info greatly appreciated !

The only way to know is to go ahead and apply. You may find that you are absolutely fine, so I wouldn't panic at this point in time, as you may be worrying needlessly.

There have been a few UK trained nurses that have had to do courses to meet NS requirements (I was one even though I trained as a general long time before UK training became specialised, EN in 86 and bridge to RN in 97)) Some UK nurse have also had to do some form of assessment before they get eligibility to sit CRNE. You could look at LPN if you didn't meet RN requirements but would have to apply to the appropriate college and be assessed.
Hi there, thanks for that. I probably am panicking needlessly ! I'm just desperate to get to NS, been going backwards and forwards on holiday since 07 ! Silverdragon you say some nurses have to do some courses, is that in the UK before they leave or courses in Canada ? I take it to do LPN I would have to do LPN course at college in Canada ? Thanks for all info
I met a couple of UK nurses here in NS Canada doing the course but I also believe some did the courses back in the UK with appropriate proctor and clinicals done at a recognised hospital. This may be something to think about if you are informed you have to make hours. The only real way is to apply and see what they say about your application. I doubt you would have to do a LPN course (that is a 2 yrs course) they will assess your application and transcripts, but I would wait and see what the NS college of RN's comes back to you with before looking at the LPN route
Hi Silverdragon,
Thanks for that. I think CRNNS should hopefully have all my transcipts and refs etc by now, so hope to hear something within the next few weeks. I will be devastated if they say no ! You are right thgh, best to wait and see what they say before thinking LPN route, I just want to get there, so I'm probably trying to pre-empt too quick thinking LPN !
What route are you looking at coming over with?
Thinking of coming over on the NS PNP. On the CIC website they are saying they are now only issuing 1000 skilled worker permits for nurses per year and of course they are being issued/used up very quickly.
I'm trying to think the most sensible route ! which I think is get registration & licensure sorted first, if I am eligible to sit the exam, then can start applying for jobs (sent out my cv to quite a few and had positive responses from employers) then apply for temporary licence, sit exam, hopefully pass ! and then be settled.
Are you based in NS ? how do you like living there ? I'm hoping to settle in the Annapolis Valley.
Hi
We have lived here since 08 and love it even though we have been hammered with storms these last 5 weeks and another one issued for later today. I have been working now 6 months and although not acute care the work is OK and pay much better than the UK. Getting positive responses doesn't really mean much I know of a few UK nurses that arrived here in NS had positive responses and still took them several months to get a job. Employers say one thing but last I heard Capital Health was only taking internal applicants at the moment. Yes FSW cap for nurses is complete at the moment but may take you a few months to get sorted with NS college so you may make the next year quota. PNP also isn't a bad route but I def would get NS college sorted first
Hi There,
Yes, not doing anything until I get sorted with college ! You are so lucky being there, did you have a job and everything lined up before you went over ? I've spoken to a couple of people who went over on a six month holiday and job hunted in the six months they were there, luckily they got jobs before the six months were up, came back sorted everything here and then headed back out again. Unfortunately I cant afford to do that ! so I'm hoping to have paperwork and job in place, then head over ! I've been sending cv's to everyone, VON, Nursing Homes, AVRH ! anyone that I come across !
The weather is crazy eh, I spoke to friends I have in Halls Harbour, they were saying they did'nt have power for 4 days ! I've been over in all seasons in the last 3 years, once I decided I wanted to make NS home, thought it was realistic to experience all the seasons !
I was fortunate that my husband got the work permit so no rush for me to work. I only started working 6 months ago however I applied all over the place and only one place got back in touch with me and tried lots of applications at the local hospital that is supposed to be desperate for RN's and still waiting to hear anything
The weather is mad, took me nearly 1 hour to drive to work which usually takes me 20 mins, ploughs hadn't been out and after several inches of snow it is now raining
Hi there, You were lucky then. Its just me and my little girl, so thats why I'm trying to do everything sensibly and logically so that its hopefully a smooth move over, mainly for her.
Gosh, that sounds quite disappointing re not hearing anything back, I'll probs get offered pizza delivery knowing my luck ! The weather has been awful here, we have had so much snow and ice and for the first time I can ever remember Edinburgh airport was closed several times.
