CRNE question

Published

I have a question about the CRNE with regard to Temporary workers visas.

Does anyone know if you come as a temporary worker to canada if you're expected to take the first available CRNE or do they allow you time to prepare for it?

And would I be leaving a bad impression if one of my questions during an interview (its probably gonna be a phone interview when I get that far) if I ask about pay amount. The only reason I would ask such a question is to prepare myself for living expense (rent, food, etc.) I dont want to rent an $800 apt if I can only afford a $ 500 apt. I expect to make living arrangements etc before landing in Canada. Any comments or experiences?

Who were you best resources on cell phone plans, internet connections, etc. basically local living. I'm considering finding someone off of craigslist whose looking for a roommate since its seems the best option because I'll be living with someone whose familiar with the area etc. Wht do you guys think. I'll be moving to Canada as a single female in her mid 20's.

I've seen that each province have immigrations services to help people adjust etc. How helpful is it really?

Nursing is pretty hard the world over, the stresses are just weighted differently. The pay here is better in comparison to the costs of living than I got in London, England & I really do like my unit here in Calgary. It's not perfect, I know, but I'm nervously awaiting my results because I truly want to stay.

It's a nicer place for the kids to grow up in & they're really happy at school already. I'm not wearing any rose tinted glasses, I can see the warts & all but on balance there are way more pros to cons. I have yet to meet anyone from the UK who wants to go back (maybe that's 'cos they've gone already!) I've spoken to UK expat patients, people in grocery stores & other nurses & they all prefer it here.

However, I know that I haven't encountered the levels of difficulties on my unit that others do on theirs, so that'll keep me where I am for sure!

I thought this was brilliant (especially the area I bolded)! Despite proscribed standards of practice, the boundaries of job duties can get very fuzzy in the way you describe, especially for the nurse who embraces the full responsibilities of patient advocate.

Though this is a separate thread, I would love for all those nervously awaiting their test results on the "October 2008 CRNE" thread to consider this insight.

Thank you so much for your clarity! Any managers reading this???

Just telling it like it is. There probably are managers reading these posts, but if they have the authority (or the will) to make changes for the better, their units are probably not having many of these issues. On our unit, it isn't so much that we "embrace the full responsibility of patient advocate" as that we have no other choice. We have supports from most of those disciplines I mentioned Monday through Friday, eight to four; "our" physiotherapist wanders through the unit on weekdays, chatting with the nurses and parents, but never laying a hand on the patient, the pharmacy shuts down at 2230 every night, there is only a handful of housekeeping staff on at night and on weekends and if we don't have a unit clerk, so what. Anybody can answer a phone. (Not that I'm saying that's all they do, I know they do much more, or at least they're supposed to.) We're often so short-staffed that even if the other nurses wanted to help out, they're too busy to even lift their heads and see what else is going on. I'm so close to burning out, and feel powerless to do anything about it.

It would be hell on earth if we didn't have a unit clerk for sure! We have ours right through from early morning to very late night & they're a blessing! We also have pretty good pharmacy, X-ray & phlebotomy cover 24/7 too. UK nurses could only dream about the cover we have!!

Again I appreciate that that's only where I am, I know others have not such great thiongs going on - I have to say my units not perfect either, this recent cold has caused untold staffing probs too.
