Hi everyone, Im an Irish nurse preparing for the CRNEs for February 2012 in Toronto. Didnt see any thread for this exam in February, so thought id start one. How is everyone preparing? Im using the CRNE prep guide doing Qs and studying the competencies. Any tips/advice? Happy studying!!
I would just google toronto area hospitals and apply directly. If you are an IEN though, you are going to have a tough go in toronto. They hire locals first, and many of the locals are struggling to find work. Not what you want to hear, I know, but that's the reality.
I'm a Torontonian and I left for work in another Province. Good luck in your search.

Is it really that difficult? I've heard they are very helpful in acccomodating IEN's needs and some hospitals provide a preceptor? In Ireland the main area that there is work available is in geriatrics. I did this for 2 years but due to recent back surgery I would be interested in an area less physical. My Boyfriend and I would be willing to move to Vancouver if there was not work available.
They will accommodate IENs when we have the need. At the moment, we don't, and there hasn't been a need for 4 years for IENs. Locally educated nurses are having difficulty finding work all across Canada and the US. Read some of the posts around here.
So, any available openings will likely be filled with Canadian nurses first, and facilities have many applicants to choose from. In particular, ON is one of the hardest places to work right now. Lots of casual and temp, few full time. The economy has been in a slump since 2008, so now is probably not the time to move. It took many of my friends 6 to 9 months to find a job, and many of them did not get full time.
It's better for you to know what you're up against. Sure, it never hurts to try....but many IENs and Canadian nurses are not finding full time work anywhere in Canada at the moment.

Thanks for your reply. Well I honestly dont think things could be as bad as they are here in Ireland re: recession and unemployment etc from what Ive hear from other friends in engineering and other areas working in Canada. I'm willing to take the risk and it's an experience also. Also any Visa seminars I have attended have all mentioned that nurses are needed so i'm unsure why they would give out this false information. I would be willing to work part-time anyway, so that would not be a problem.
You have to realize that there is lots of false information out there about the nursing shortage. There is no shortage. Not right now. Also, before they recruit IENs, it means that there are few local applicants for the job, which is not the case. You may not believe this now, but when you begin your job search, it will be clearer.

well im sitting the crnes in feb 2012 and iv applied for my visa so I'm not turning back now! It's a challenge and I'm willing to work on the outskirts of Toronto if needs be. Thanks for the info though!!
TSON is not really good, classroom is so small, teacher just read the notes, looks like no experience of teaching whatsoever. I recommend HCPT and Topnotch Nursing Review & Workshop Center. If you really want a very good information about this email me [email protected] so you won't waste your money.
Good luck everyone with the exam, less than a month to go. I'm taking the course at the Toronto School of Nursing too and am find it pretty good. The class size is small, but our instructor really helps with nursing practice issues and is quite helpful. I never knew how much I missed in university lol. I am really trying to study a lot and would definitely recommend them. I am trying to do a lot of questions everyday and their test bank is pretty good. I don't want to fail this time at all. I also bought mosbys and lippincott this time, cause I don't want to take any chances. I also find studying care plans really helps me with understanding the best nursing interventions. Good luck everyone less than a month to go!!!!
We will become aware of the exam centre a couple of weeks the test date, so I don't think anyone will know until then. Hopefully we find out soon so that you will know where to stay!
23 days to go! Study hard everyone!!!
Lols ireland
